The NFL is expected to release its national television schedule for the season's opening weekend and Thanksgiving tomorrow, during the first day of the league's owner's meetings.
The rest of schedule was tentatively slated to be released on Thursday, though that has come off the NFL Network television schedule since. We already know that the Cowboys' 2008 opponents will be ...
HOME
Eagles
Giants
Commanders
49ers
Seahawks
Buccaneers
Ravens
Bengals
ROAD
Eagles
Giants
Commanders
Cardinals
Rams
Packers
Browns
Steelers
It's a fair bet that when the national TV schedule for Week 1 comes out, the Cowboys will be on it. They were last year, and the league won't hesitate at the chance to put one of its flagship clubs -- one that went 13-3 last year and should have plenty of circus-like elements to it in 2008 -- on a big stage.
We know this much already: It won't be the Giants or Commanders, who will play each other in the Thursday night season-opener at Meadowlands.
If Dallas gets the Sunday night slot, the premier one, then there are a few possibilities. The Eagles, of course, would be a big draw. But the league has shown a tendency, at times, to put inter-conference matchups early on. And with the AFC North on the Cowboys' plate, there are plenty of options.
The Browns loaded up in the offseason, after going 10-6 and missing the playoffs. The Steelers won that division and are another of the league's most visible clubs. And then there are the Bengals, who don't seem all that intriguing, unless there's a certain receiver traded from The 'Nati to The Ranch (Don't discount the potential ex-Mountaineer/trouble-finder matchup of Pacman vs. Chris Henry, either).
But perhaps the most attractive matchup of all would be against the Packers, in the first game of the post-Favre era. Green Bay could retire No. 4, and introduce Aaron Rodgers to the world at Lambeau Field with a prime-timer, something that the Cowboys probably wouldn't be all that upset about, if the alternative is going to Wisconsin in December against a more-seasoned Rodgers.
Now, if the game were to be part of the ESPN Monday Night doubleheader, the dynamics change, and it would probably be a less-than-marquee opponent for Dallas.
As for Thanksgiving, we can narrow that one down, too. Per the rotation with Detroit, the opponent will be an NFC foe, since FOX will have the game. Also, the league has been hesitant to have the Cowboys face a division opponent on Turkey Day; It's only happened twice in the last 15 years, both against the Commanders.
On that logic, it would be either the Rams or Cardinals, opponents that might inspire the league to break from its way and put an NFC East team opposite the Cowboys on the holiday.
