Schedule on deck

Albert Breer E-mail News tips

The NFL is expected to release its national television schedule for the season's opening weekend and Thanksgiving tomorrow, during the first day of the league's owner's meetings.

The rest of schedule was tentatively slated to be released on Thursday, though that has come off the NFL Network television schedule since. We already know that the Cowboys' 2008 opponents will be ...

HOME
Eagles
Giants
Commanders
49ers
Seahawks
Buccaneers
Ravens
Bengals

ROAD
Eagles
Giants
Commanders
Cardinals
Rams
Packers
Browns
Steelers

It's a fair bet that when the national TV schedule for Week 1 comes out, the Cowboys will be on it. They were last year, and the league won't hesitate at the chance to put one of its flagship clubs -- one that went 13-3 last year and should have plenty of circus-like elements to it in 2008 -- on a big stage.

We know this much already: It won't be the Giants or Commanders, who will play each other in the Thursday night season-opener at Meadowlands.

If Dallas gets the Sunday night slot, the premier one, then there are a few possibilities. The Eagles, of course, would be a big draw. But the league has shown a tendency, at times, to put inter-conference matchups early on. And with the AFC North on the Cowboys' plate, there are plenty of options.

The Browns loaded up in the offseason, after going 10-6 and missing the playoffs. The Steelers won that division and are another of the league's most visible clubs. And then there are the Bengals, who don't seem all that intriguing, unless there's a certain receiver traded from The 'Nati to The Ranch (Don't discount the potential ex-Mountaineer/trouble-finder matchup of Pacman vs. Chris Henry, either).

But perhaps the most attractive matchup of all would be against the Packers, in the first game of the post-Favre era. Green Bay could retire No. 4, and introduce Aaron Rodgers to the world at Lambeau Field with a prime-timer, something that the Cowboys probably wouldn't be all that upset about, if the alternative is going to Wisconsin in December against a more-seasoned Rodgers.

Now, if the game were to be part of the ESPN Monday Night doubleheader, the dynamics change, and it would probably be a less-than-marquee opponent for Dallas.

As for Thanksgiving, we can narrow that one down, too. Per the rotation with Detroit, the opponent will be an NFC foe, since FOX will have the game. Also, the league has been hesitant to have the Cowboys face a division opponent on Turkey Day; It's only happened twice in the last 15 years, both against the Commanders.

On that logic, it would be either the Rams or Cardinals, opponents that might inspire the league to break from its way and put an NFC East team opposite the Cowboys on the holiday.

Nice work, Breer. How are the Cowboys going to play a scheduled road game at home on Thanskgiving?

Yeah, that's probably not going to work.

was this a guess or was it announced/leaked?

Cowboys and Commanders would be a great way for us to close out Texas Stadium and no way would the Skins win that one. That would be like when we closed out RFK.

When do tickets go on sale??????????????

sold out.

I am going to guess we open with seattle at home or baltimore on the road.

San Francisco or washington for turkey day.

Cleveland on a monday night on espn.

Pittsburgh on a sunday night. Although cbs will fight like crazy to keep the cleveland and pittsburgh games.

Washington to close.

At ny for a sunday night.

Must admit that no team on that lists scares me & it shouldn't scare the Cowboys either. If we play all of this season like we played much of last year, we can beat anybody & everybody. If we play like we did in the last 3 games, we can't fight our way out of a paperbag.

I believe in this team. We'll add some good players in the draft; some will contribute almost right away while others will take longer & a few will be upgrades at the bottom end of the roster. It's probable we also trade for 1-2players who can make a difference. But the point is our young team gained another year of maturity & realizes how good we can really become; our QB has gained more field experience entering his 2nd season; Jason Garrett enters his 2nd season as an OC & will continue Romo's development. Wade Phillips has a better handle what our defense can do & what needs be done to reach full potential of his 34 scheme. We've also added some pretty good coaches to replace those who have left; really don't think we lost that much except Ireland hurts. Just as important, Jerry Jones now really knows how good a team he has on his hands & will do everything he can to add those very few missing pieces. Get 'er done Jerry.

None of the games really make me want to pay 200 bucks.

I may just wait for Playoffs.

Which home games do you guys like?

Here's my prediction for wins/losses:
1 vs Bengals - win
2 at Cardinals - win
3 at Eagles -win
4 vs Giants - win
5 at Cleveland - win
6 BYE
7 at Commanders - win
8 vs Seahawks - win (JuJo doesn't crack 75)
9 vs 49ers - win
10 at Giants - loss
11 at GB - win
12 vs Ravens - win
13 vs Eagles - win
14 at Rams - win
15 vs Bucs - win
16 vs Commanders - win
17 at Steelers - win

Can't believe I actually pick them to go 15-1, but the teams on the schedule really don't seem to be at the same level. The Iggles could be the wild card of the bunch. Depends on if McNabb gets a quality WR to play catch with. The Skins will be learning a new system, so I don't look for them to play lights out this year. I gave the Giants a courtesy win as defending champs.

Of the non-divisional opponents, possible losses could be at Cleveland and at Pitt.

Best case scenario: 15-1. Worst case scenario (IMHO): 12-4

Uh Albert? We play the Cardinals and Rams on the road and the Thanksgiving Day games are played at Home.

I'd bet on the G-Men as the Thanksgiving day game. I think the Packers-Cowboys matchup on opening day is also a good bet.

CBS doesn't get the Cleveland/Pitsburgh games, FOX normally would.

Cleveland and Pittsburgh are AFC teams which is CBS, Fox is the NFC.

When it is a NFC vs AFC game, the game belongs to the road teams conference, since the games Are the Boys at Cleveland and Pitt, the games would belong to Fox.

Just look at the Thanksgiving game from last year. Jets at Boys. It was a CBS game.
