Todd Archer E-mail News tips

So my flight home is delayed for a bit here at John Wayne Airport, so I thought I'd give some more nuggest gleaned here from the NFL Owners' Meetings that I don't think the guys have touched on.

** The Cowboys will not practice against another team during training camp now that they are calling their summer home San Antonio. I asked Houston owner Bob McNair about some scrimmages with the Cowboys and he said the Texans will be practicing against the Saints.

** Wade Phillips believes Junior Siavii and Tim Anderson could be the answer at nose tackle behind Jay Ratliff. The Cowboys thought Siavii would hook on with a team last year after he was mong their final cuts. Anderson was a third round pick a few years ago. But Phillips also mentioned Siavii's relationship with Igor Olshansky and I forgot they played at Oregon together.

"They have a close relationship," Phillips said. "They work hard together. Both were high draft choices coming out of Oregon and they push each other and compete with each other with everything they did in college. Igor talked about, I'm going to get with Junior and we're going to do this and we're going to do that and Junior says, Well, I can out do him. So I think it'll be a fun thing for us to have them."

** I asked Phillips if it was worth it to have Adam Jones on the roster. Here's what he had to say: "He actually played pretty well. Production on the field, he did a lot of good things. He had the most pass breakups of any of our defensive backs last year. Of course, Newman was hurt a lot of the year last year, but he made some plays though he didn't make the interceptions we would've liked or the return stuff we would've liked. But we didn't win the games we would've liked."

** Without Pacman and Anthony Henry, the Cowboys will turn to Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick at right cornerback.

"Jenkins really played better and better in the last part of the year," Phillips said. "I thought Jenkins was playing really well. Scandrick played better and better all year. Both are really talented and I think that's going to be a really good thing for us."

** Phillips said he was disappointed the Cowboys were not able to add Dan Reeves to the payroll this off-season, but he is happy to have Reeves' son in-law, Joe DeCamillis, as special teams' coach.

"He'll add a lot to us not just coaching but enthusiasm," Phillips said. "They'll flock to him. He's a real leader as far as that's concerned. He's real boisterous. He's a fired-up guy that way he coaches."

** With the draft a month away owner and GM Jerry Jones said it's highly unlikely the Cowboys will be in the free agent market for the time being. Phillips said the Cowboys have filled their needs so they don't need to reach for a spot in the draft.

** The off-season program starts on Monday and Phillips said around 30 players have been at Valley Ranch working out before it begins.

Good info. I still think they need to look around for a vet CB (Lucas/McAllister/Rolle) someone. I'm not confident that Newman will make it 16 games and behind him we have 2 2nd year players and a former 7th round draft choice that hasn't played much.

This is one the best things I've read all off season.

What was weird was that none of the quotes mentioned Tim Anderson.

I hate the idea of training camp in a sterile, air conditioned dome. Just doesn't seem right.

What difference does it make where camp cupcake takes place. The players will just be lounging around anyway.

Plus I get to see them as often as I want, and you get eyewitness reports.

Who is Tim Anderson?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Anderson_(American_football)

I pulled this from Fox Sports:

Anderson put up a career-high 45 tackles in 2003, including 11 for a loss, 3.5 sacks, two passes deflected, and two fumbles recovered. He is a competitive run-stuffer who always gives 100%. Strong and powerful, he can hold the point of attack vs. the run and is good at shedding blocks. Anderson has a 500 lb. bench press and a 33' vertical jump and plays hard on every down. He needs to improve on his pass rush skills and must learn to use his hands better. Anderson doesn't have a great burst off the line but is an extremely hard worker. He plays much quicker than his size is but needs to get stronger for his style of play in the NFL.

I can't remember for sure... But wasn't the last time we had camp in SA 2003, when we had our best year in forever?

No, it was before the 2007 year, when we went 13-3. Wade's rookie year.

Doh! But still, the years at the Dome have been our best years. :)

Kind of like the new stadium? ;)

They will become a bad weather adverse team.

Sorry, not buying it. If we fix the running game and play good solid defense, we can win in any condition.

Their just having Junior and Tim right now since they won't have to reach for a NT..if one was there like a Dorell Scott or Ron Brace(Eheeem Bob!) then they would pick him, but their just keeping their options open.

Junior would only play about 15 snaps anyways..no biggy!

It is obvious they are looking D Line round 2. Saying they like Savii and Anderson sounds like a major smoke screen. If either of these guys could play they would already be on somebody elses roster at their ages, and would have been for a long time. Stopping the run always top priority, so run stuffers in high demand in the league, but apparently not these guys.

I disagree.

I think the team is happy with Ratliff on the nose and are only looking for his backup.

I had thought that they had planned to move Ratliff to end and draft a bigger nose tackle, but the more I see, and with Olshansky's signing, I doubt that's the case.

I moved nose tackle down on my list of priorities and I think the Cowboys have done the same.
