What if Wade Phillips went crazy now?

The overriding theme from yesterday's open locker room session was whether Wade Phillips was tough enough on the players. We all know that Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells would tear into guys after sub-par performances. Maybe Phillips does that behind closed doors, but we're not going to see that in public, according to Marcus Spears.

"Wade doesn't break chalkboards in front of you guys [the media] and doesn't stomp his hand on the podium or throw the microphone because we didn't play up to you guys' standard," Spears said. "Y'all see it a problem. But when we get into the meeting, Wade is able to translate how he feels about the way we played."

Spears then touched on the exact problem with the Phillips is too hard/too soft argument. He's not living up to the perceived standard set by previous Cowboys coaches.

"Y'all hard on coach, because he doesn't react how you all want him to react," Spears said. "You've got to learn how to make that adjustment; we have."

You guys think Phillips really acts like this behind closed doors?

The media are the ones who have this all figured out. They KNOW how a coach is supposed to act. They KNOW that Wade doesn't discipline his guys and can't coach. How do they KNOW this? Don't ask. They just do. Just like they KNEW that Norv Turner was going to be the guy, and that he was a better hire than Wade Phillips...

A coach doesn't need to be a screaming lunatic to be a motivator or leader, quite the contrary IMO. I just don't know if our players respect Wade - I think they LIKE him but I don't know if they respect him. There is a big difference.

I think wade is a good coach that needs to start getting the guys more ready to play. I think he can do it.

I wouldn't mind him getting the them more emotional for the games.

What do you guys think?

i did say on gameday that id give anything for Jimmy Johnson to comeback because of the fire that he coached with... i seriously cant even imagine Wade screaming acting mad lol he's just too much of a teddy bear. i bet the players find it funny when he gets mad...

BTW im not criticizing Wade its just what i think...

I like Wade but I don't think this is his type of team! I think he would be better with an underdog type team like the Rams! This team needs Jimmy to come in and change the coulture! Give that swagger back to the Cowboys! Jimmy expected to win Wade hopes to win like most. You think Vince lombardi ever hoped to win? Parcells broke the players down so much that Wades style has been almost useless!

Terrell Owens said on the Michael Irvin Show that the players know when Wade is angry and that there IS fear in the locker room. However, with Wade being a Texas gentleman like you don't always find elsewhere, I'm sure he isn't as demonstrative as some coaches are. He doesn't need to be: he just needs to get his point across and I'm sure he does that.

but still the motivation has to come from somewhere, and I don't think it's coming from Wade, as he treats everyone like a man, until they screw up, in otherwords is nonchalant w/ you until you mess up, alot of people can get around that...

and when has TO ever worked on fear? Parcells, Todd Haley, the San Fran O-coordinator were fiery individuals who he clashed w/

You'll have to ask Owens that question. But that's what he said.

Tom Landry never "fired his guys up". He believed it was his job to prepare them for the upcoming opponent, but a professional player's job to motivate himself.

And like your second paragraph says, TO isn't going to work with a dictator type anyway. We know how that turns out.
