Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said linebacker Anthony Spencer, who was arrested earlier this off-season for an incident in Indianapolis, has been cleared by the legal system.

Jones was not sure if Spencer would still be subject to penalty by the NFL for violating the personal conduct policy, and coach Wade Phillips said he's not sure if the team would impose any kind of penalty on Spencer.

The Cowboys fined tight end Martellus Bennett earlier this year for a video in which he made inappropriate remarks while wearing a Cowboys helmet. Bennett has appealed the fine, but Jones said nothing has been resolved.

Spencer was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after refusing to leave a nightclub.

Wow. Hope this helps to reduce any punishment the commish might dish out.

A decent lawyer and 300$ later, Spencer is free.

:jackpot: I'm glad that resisting arrest thing went away to.

Justice is a good lawyer or hte money to buy one. See OJ.

Wonder why Bennett is appealing the fine. That was a pretty cut-and-dry case of You-shouldn't-have-been-wearing-our-helmet-while-being-an-***.

If he's been cleared by the legal sysem, I don't see why he would receive any punishment.

I've heard many times that you don't have to be convicted by the legal system in order to be disciplined or punished by the league. I maybe wrong though.

Was Spencer doing what was alleged while wearing a helmet? haha (personally there are quite a few players who I'd not recognize if not for the jersey hehe)

if he was in street clothes, etc, and the legal system sees fit not to pursue the offense, then I think Goodell should meet w/ him, give him a warning, but that'd be it. But knowing Goodell and the fact that Spencer is a Dallas Cowboys, I'm sure a minimum 1 game suspension may be dealt out.

True, the NFL is not a court of law. They do however have rules pertaining to player conduct that they expect their members to follow and have the right to punish when they violate them. I hope Spencer does not have to miss time and is given a warning by the league and keeps out of trouble

It would probably be malpractice by his agent (and union) if they didn't appeal that fine and try to get it reduced at the very least.

you are correct, the NFL works independently of the justice system

Spencer cleared

All charges against Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer have been dropped, owner Jerry Jones said. Thus, Spencer is not expected to face discipline from the NFL.

Spencer was arrested in January on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct outside a bar in Indianapolis.

Spencer, a first-round pick in 2007, had 59 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 12 games last season.

Good to hear, I would still think that will be strike 1 against him as far as the league drug and alcohol policy

I heard that the incident outside involved Spencer trying to go back in the bar to get some of his own stuff. They didn't allow him to, so he raised a commotion.

You're probably right that it's an obligatory appeal for the amount of the fine.

I really like the look of Bennett on the field. I think he's going to be a good player and a huge headache down the road.

Doubt very much that we are talking suspension now. League may let Jerry deal with this. Jerry should still take a game check out of his hide.

The case against Anthony Spencer was ludicrous, preposterous, and ridiculous.
