Tashard Choice should demand a king's ransom

Brian Davis E-mail News tips

Tashard Choice acted like he didn't have a choice in the matter on switching jersey numbers to accommodate the newly (re)acquired Keith Davis. I would simply hope that Choice gets a heck of a deal out of it.

When asked what Davis offered, Choice said: "I really don't know. He's going to talk to me, so hopefully it's something good. Something I can keep. No. 29 isn't my first love. I wore No. 22 in college. Any other number besides that is like a second choice for me.

Q: So you don't want to wear No. 22 here?

"Oh, no. That's a man there," Choice said with a smile. "Actually the first day I came here, they said, 'We try to give you guys the same number you guys had in college. But Tashard, I don't think you're going to get 22.'"

I thought the equipment manager sets certain numbers aside like 8,12,22,88 and i think there are a few others

Not 88. If I remember correctly there have been a couple of guys who have worn it since Mike.

Wasn't AB one of them?

Correct, Antonio Bryant did wear 88.

Dallas does not "retire" jerseys like many other teams, they set a very elite few aside (12, 8, 22.... *cough* 9 *cough*) for a period of time.

Edit: If the NFL ever does decide to increase roster limits, you'll probably see fewer numbers retired or set-aside league wide.

Yup. Shouldn't be the case anymore with Mike going to the hall. Then again, I think I heard that Jerry doesn't retire numbers.

There might be another 88 out there that disagrees with the number belonging to Michael.

I kind of like the idea of 88 going to a new young franchise WR from time to time. It's an homage to the others, but a responsibility to live up to. Bryant wearing it was a mistake by any standard.

the more i read about Tashard Choice and hear comments like these, the more i like him.. i know that he looked up to Emmitt and i believe that's why he wore #22 in the first place.. i love that he didn't even think about wanting that number here cause he knew that nobody should wear that number again.. and i thought it was funny what they said to him, that they didn't think he was going to get #22..

also, cool of Choice to give up the number so humbly to Davis..

22.....is outta question

The Cowboys don't retire numbers, so I don't know what the deal is about not giving him 22. Whats the difference between him getting it this year and Jim Bob Jones getting it in 2017?

I agree with occasionally allowing special rookies the opportunity to carry on the tradition of hallowed numbers.

AB was a talented player, he just wasn't mature enough at the time and our coaches couldn't get through to him.

Tight ends Jeff Robinson and Jackie Harris also wore #88 after Michael Irvin's retirement, which was uncalled for, IMO.

You beat. Pearson was the man long before Michael was. There are so many greats for the Cowboys you can't retire but so many. Lilly, Staubach and Emmitt are the only ones I know aren't given out. 33 should have been.

The only number I heard would never be given out again is Bob Lily's. Don't know if that is true or not. Many have worn #33 since Dorsett, I think.

my personal opinion is that the only numbers that shouldn't ever be given out again are:

74, 12, and 22. those three are truly the elite, all-time Cowboys.. i could see an argument for 8 and 33, but i still think those two are a level below Emmitt, Lily and Staubach..

88 gets used and abused all the time by scrubs now. We've had Antonio Bryant, Brett Pierce, and maybe some more since Irvin left.

Smart answer. Earlier in the year, there was a public outrage amongst Yankee fans when Latroy Hawkins decided to wear Paul O'Neil's 21.

It was also worn by Drew Pearson, no slouch himself.
