As the Cowboys enjoy the weekend off, let's try and figure out which team will visit Cowboys Stadium next year on Thanksgiving.
First, the game will be on Fox, so we know it's an NFC team. Next year the Cowboys will play home games against Chicago, Detroit and a corresponding team from the NFC South as well as NFC East foes, Washington, Philadelphia and New York,
We can exclude Detroit since the Lions host their own Thanksgiving Day game. Chicago played the Cowboys in 2004, so I'd think they'd be out, too.
That brings us to the NFC South. If the Cowboys finish first, then they'd play New Orleans at home. I'm thinking Fox would like a Tony Romo vs. Drew Brees/Sean Payton game after some real stinkers on the holiday. But if the Cowboys don't win the NFC East, then they'd match up with Atlanta (that could be a draw), Carolina or Tampa Bay, who visited in 2006.
On to the division foes. The Cowboys have played Washington six times on Thanksgiving, the most frequent holiday opponent. They have played the Giants and Eagles just once. Since the Giants had to play on Thanksgiving this season, I'd rule them out. So it's down to the Commanders or Eagles from the division.
The last time the Cowboys played a division game on the holiday was 2002 against Washington. Maybe that streak ends in 2010.
But if the Saints and Cowboys match up as division winners, that would be my guess.
