The 2010 Thanksgiving Day opponent will be ...

As the Cowboys enjoy the weekend off, let's try and figure out which team will visit Cowboys Stadium next year on Thanksgiving.

First, the game will be on Fox, so we know it's an NFC team. Next year the Cowboys will play home games against Chicago, Detroit and a corresponding team from the NFC South as well as NFC East foes, Washington, Philadelphia and New York,

We can exclude Detroit since the Lions host their own Thanksgiving Day game. Chicago played the Cowboys in 2004, so I'd think they'd be out, too.

That brings us to the NFC South. If the Cowboys finish first, then they'd play New Orleans at home. I'm thinking Fox would like a Tony Romo vs. Drew Brees/Sean Payton game after some real stinkers on the holiday. But if the Cowboys don't win the NFC East, then they'd match up with Atlanta (that could be a draw), Carolina or Tampa Bay, who visited in 2006.

On to the division foes. The Cowboys have played Washington six times on Thanksgiving, the most frequent holiday opponent. They have played the Giants and Eagles just once. Since the Giants had to play on Thanksgiving this season, I'd rule them out. So it's down to the Commanders or Eagles from the division.

The last time the Cowboys played a division game on the holiday was 2002 against Washington. Maybe that streak ends in 2010.

But if the Saints and Cowboys match up as division winners, that would be my guess.

Interesting.
I wonder how the Saints will fare next season.

I dont think i would want to play the saints on thanksgiving, they are still a fairly young team with talent, only will get better next year

I think it would be better to play Commanders or atlanta, someone like that or even eagles maybe.

I would not be surprised with Chicago at all, the NFL has never shied away from using the same teams repeatedly (When Detroit plays an NFC team, when is it NOT GB?). No way would Fox want a Dal/NO game wasted on Thanksgiving.

That would also mean we don't win the NFC EAST this year.

Idk, they have a lot of young talent, but there has to be a way to figure them out.

They have slumped this year, and should have lost a couple of games.
Besides, next year we should have several of our rookies healthy and ready to contribute.

He's obviously not playing the trend game... our previous 4 thanksgiving opponents: Bucs, Jets, Hawks, Raiders. What makes him think that we'll bust out of that mold to play a high-ratings opponent?

Shouldn't they announce the schedule formula for 2010 first? The current formula has yet to be confirmed for the next years.

Exactly. The NFL doesn't NEED to put high-profile games on Thanksgiving, because the ratings probably wouldn't be much different, no matter who is playing.

Right. Because that game will be a big draw on a late Sunday game, or NBC may want that for a Sunday night game.

FOX will get the ratings no matter who is playing Dallas on T-day.
Wouldn't doubt if it is Chicago.

It's on a rotating basis. Schedule formula is in place already. And has been since they re-aligned the Divisions. Been the same ever since.

I have a feeling it will be an NFC East foe, I would expect a matchup with the Saints would be something that Sunday Night football or Monday Night football will make sure they get.
