DeMarcus Ware received a six year extension worth $78 million. He received a $20 million signing bonus and will make $34 million in the first 12 months of the deal between bonuses and base salaries.

In the first two years, he will make $40 million, equalling Baltimore's Terrell Suggs' record and in the first three years he will make $45 million, matching Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

Not bad numbers when you factor in the Cowboys could have used the franchise tag on him for the next three years and not been close to the $45 million.

Absolutely worth every single penny of that deal. They could have given him double that and I wouldn't have complained.

Has Adam crunched the cap numbers yet?

I'd like to see them as well. Just based off those numbers, looks like a great job on the part of the Jones family.

The Cowboys will pay DeMarcus Ware $78 million in "new money" over the six-year extension.

As we mentioned before, he received a $20 million in the form of a signing bonus. The Cowboys added $5 million to his 2009 base salary.

Here's the rest of the base salary breakdown:

2010 - $7.8 million
2011 - $6.7 million
2012 - $4.5 million
2013 - $5.5 million
2014 - $12.250 million
2015 - $13.750 million.

He can also earn $500,000 per year in workout bonuses from 2011-15. Given that he's a workout warrior, that's an easy $2.5 million he should pocket.

[I'm not sure to be happy because of the smaller cap hit early, or disappointed because there are probably going to be negotiations later on because the contract is so backloaded.

Interesting that the base salary starts out high and goes down to 4.5MM, then back up. Typically they just gradually increase. Wonder what that signals.

Interesting question. I wonder if the 1st year is higher because they wanted to give him more money this year and next to alleviate concerns Ware might have had about getting injured and not seeing the end of a backloaded contract. Of course if $40 mil is guaranteed anyway, that might not matter.

I expect it is because we're still way under the cap this year and next year will either be uncapped or we'll still be in decent enough shape. These are my favorite deals. Seems pretty smart.

Worth every penny!

I understand what is being said. You have to judge his value in the context of what other NFL players or making. Otherwise, there isn't a man alive in my judgment (however flawed) that is "worth" $45 million over three years.

from the outside looking in, this is a great contract. It's basically a 5 years, 52 million dollars contract ( 20 of those mills as a signing bonus ), with a 2 years 26 millions team option. Assuming there's no cap next season, but one starting in 2011, this is how I think it breaks down:

2010 - $7.8 millions ( no cap so the PRB [pro rated bonus] is meaningless.)
2011 - $6.7 million + 3.3 PRB = 10 mills (cap hit)
2012 - $4.5 million + 3.3 PRB = 7.8 mills (cap hit)
2013 - $5.5 million + 3.3 PRB = 8.8 mills (cap hit)
2014 - $12.250 million + 3.3 PRB = 15.5 mills (cap hit)
2015 - $13.750 million. + 3.3 PRB = 17 mills (cap hit)

All 52 millions are virtually guaranteed unless he suffers a career ending injury or a massive lack of production bug that would force the team to release him any time before the 2013 season.

If he's still one of the best in the league after the 2013 season, the Cowboys can keep the contract the way it is or renegotiate it.

If they have to cut him after 2013, the " dead money " figure woud be 6.9 millions. Depending on how the new CBA is going to be structured and the new cap set up, that's about 5% of the current cap figure.

Not bad.. not bad at all..

I am going to get bashed, but I think we overpaid. When was the last time he took over a game? I'll give you a hint, Never. Half of his sacks are when the game is out of reach. I love Ware, but don't think he is the end all to be all that others do. I love the numbers, but more than once I have wondered where Ware was when we needed him.

You're absolutely right. You're gonna get bashed. And deservedly so.

But I'll answer your question -- about 29 hours ago. Dallas is down 7-3. Atlanta is driving the ball once again in the 2nd quarter after an abysmal 1st quarter by the Cowboys, defensively and offensively. Ware makes a huge play, a sack-fumble. On the next snap, Tony chunks it 59 yards to Miles Austin for a TD.

It completely changed the complexion of the game.
