Tony Romo/Roy Williams Report, Day 5

We'll keep this short, because there's not much to report. Tony Romo threw three passes to Roy Williams during 7-on-7 and team drills this afternoon, completing one of them for about 15 yards.

The completion came on a fade route against Courtney Brown. Romo lofted the ball to Williams' back shoulder, and the coachable wide receiver did what he does best: went up high to make the contested catch.

Williams couldn't make a contested catch downfield against Terence Newman earlier in team drills, when Romo targeted his new No. 1 WR on two of nine passing attempts. Williams ran an out-and-up that was perfectly played by Newman, who ran step for step with Williams. Newman had tight inside position, making it pretty much impossible for Williams to gather himself and jump to make a play on the ball.

Romo's throw to Williams on a short crossing route during 7-on-7s sailed high. Williams tried to snatch the ball with his right hand on the run but couldn't make the highlight-reel catch.

We're still waiting for the practice when he see the Romo/Roy connection really click during training camp.

Play of the Day: Sam Hurd soars

Sam Hurd doesn't want any credit for his pretty leaping catch on a post route over Courtney Brown.

"Romo threw a perfect ball," said Hurd, who lined up in the left slot and ran the post instead of an in route when he saw no safety in the middle of the field. "That's basically what it was. It wasn't a great catch, just a perfect ball."

Hurd is right about Romo throwing a perfect ball, putting it in a small window up and away from Brown, who was a half-step behind the receiver after biting on an outside fake. Romo put the ball where only Hurd could get it.

But it was also one heck of a catch by Hurd. He soared off the Alamdome turf, twisted to get his body in good position to make the catch and snared it out of the air with two hands.

Thank you for the blogs and articles.

I sure do hope that all this will lead to a vast amount of victories from September to February.

I'm used to seeing T.O. thrown to all the time that when Roy is thrown to for 1/4 of the passes I think "wow, that's not enough."

Sam Hurd, aka 'Mr. August,' is at it again
By Tom Orsborn on Aug 2, 09 03:49 PM | Permalink | Comments (1)

That's what I like to call WR Sam Hurd, who typically looks great in camp but never materializes as a threat in the regular season.

True to form, the San Antonio Brackenridge graduate is putting on a show at camp. He's had few drops and has been really impressive coming off the snap, something Wade Phillips noted Sunday.

"Sam is one of those guys that plays fast in a uniform on," Phillips said. "I don't know what his speed is, but he's fast with a uniform on. He's in the right place all the time. I think Tony (Romo) has a good feel for Sam having played with him some."

But is this the year Hurd finally breaks through in the regular season as a wideout?

"I hope so," Phillips said. "He's certainly the right kind of guy, tremendous worker, almost overworks at times. And we have talked to him about that and tried to work with him on that. But timing-wise on a route, he is where he's supposed to be. I think the quarterback feels good about that."

Phillips was reluctant to rate the receivers, saying simply that Hurd, Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin are "competing."

The Cowboys are taking a closer look at the wideouts during this afternoon's practice.

I want to see Hurd in the slot. He has much more speed than Crayton. HOpefully Miles will get the starting nod and Crayton will be on the bench.

Wade Phillips on SamHurd today:

Sam is one of those that plays fast with a uniform on. I don't know what his speed is, but he's fast with a uniform on. He's in the right place all the time, you know, and Tony Romo has a good feel for Sam.

He's the right kind of guy, certainly, he's a tremendous worker. Almost overworks at times and we have talked to him about that and worked with him on that.

But he has a lot of ability, timing wise on a route, he's where he's supposed to be. Quarterbacks feel good about that. He plays both sides, he's versatile enough to do that, but right now he's behind Patrick Crayton.

On Miles Austin:

I think Miles has come on the last couple of practices, I think he's had some good practices, route running and getting a feel. He has great speed and sometimes he overdoes it, he's not patient enough at times. He's starting to get that well. He's looked a lot better the last couple of practices.

We're going to throw a lot this afternoon and see where they are. Give them all an opportunity and see how Tony feels with them.

We're trying to get the best players on the field and we'll see how it works out, but we're way too early for saying how this guys better than that guy.

We're not to that point yet, we're trying to train them all and get them ready.

Nah man, Crayton is way faster than Hurd.
Hurd is a slower Roy.
Same build, leaping ability, solid hands.
Crayton was made for the slot.

I must be watching the wrong Hurd then. I apologize.

Bull.

Sam Hurd barely played as a rookie, but had over 300 yards receiving in '07 as a rarely thrown to third receiver. He had a huge touchdown in the week one victory over the Giants and recovered a key fumble in the victory at Carolina.

Hurd was hurt most of last season, but he sprung Marion Barber for a 70 yard touchdown to keep us in the game before going on IR.

Only someone who doesn't watch the games would say Hurd never materializes.

Hurd runs a 4.61 40, Crayton runs 4.51 40. I know 40 times don't tell the whole story, but Crayton is faster than Hurd.
Hurd is better suited outside anyway due to his leaping ability.

I really like our WRs. I'm not sure how good they'll be, but they work hard and have nice hands.

Both Hurd and Austin will be assets this year. I still think Austin has more ability. He can really get down field. But I also love his tenacity and hands. You want Hurd on the field.

Those that are dismissing Crayton are being foolish. This guy has made some big plays for us the last four years. So far, everyone's been raving about how he looks this year. He'll never be as fast as Roy, or Austin, or Santana Moss....but he knows how to get open....and makes the catch. I've always thought of him as a Hines Ward-type.

I still think most of us haven't forgiven him for his two huge gaffes in the playoff game. Yes, if he makes one of those two plays we probably win.....but he didn't. We need to let it go.

Our skill positions are shaping up nicely. We have three good RBs. That will be a position that will be run by committee. We have four good WRs....that will also be run by committee. We also have a dynamic duo at TE.

I think we'll be fine without TO.....if only we had this kind of potential along the OL.

I'm talking about game speed. I think Hurd is faster on the field running routes and ATC.

Did you really just compare Hurd's body type to Roy Williams?

And Hurd is faster than Crayton, but i'm not about to get into that argument with you. Watch the football games that the Dallas Cowboys play, and you'd see who is quicker and faster, game speed wise.

I don't know where you got your numbers. I thought both guys were 4.6 guys.

I'm not trying to be a jerk.....I'm just wondering where you got your numbers. I don't think either guy was at the combine.
