DMN Blog: Victor Butler's production

Let's see him do it with some consistency. With the way people have turned on Ware, a couple of sackless games and Butler will be regarded as a Barbie Carpenter sized bust here. ;)

Sorry. I'm not one of those people that turned on Ware. Strange creatures they are...

:laugh2: I will gladly take everything I said about Carpenter back the next time (or first time) he records 2 sacks and a FF in 2 consecutive snaps.

Butler did not get those in garbage time, Panthers were still a quick TD and onside kick away from being in the game.

Turning on Demarcus Ware is not allowed!

He's the best player on the entire team, the sacks will come soon.

That would actually benefit both players. Pull Spencer off the nickel packages to keep him fresh, and have a fresh Butler coming in to make QB's crap their pants on passing downs.

Victor Butler has 2 sacks, 1 FF, and 5 tackles.

G. Ellis, has 3 sacks, 1 FF, and 9 tackles.

Who is getting full time playing time of those two?

Grant Ellis, we'll never forget you.
:laugh2:

I've been pretty down on Spencer all offseason.....and for his career thus far.

But he's done pretty well. He is doing a good job against the run and has looked pretty smooth in coverage to boot. His pass rush hasn't flashed yet, but overall, I've been pretty happy with his play.

More Butler and less Spencer seems as though it will be a very good thing. Wake up Spencer. A rook is about to snatch a load of PT away from you.

Spencer had a good game. Was great in coverage too. Don't get me wrong, get Butler out there as much as possible. But don't knock Spencer.

Anthony Spencer is a good run defender and most certainly a big upgrade in pass coverage over Greg Ellis.

But the sacks have not come yet.

They will, but platooning Spencer and Victor Butler will be good for both and make the defense better.

We may even see both on the field with Demarcus Ware at some point in our Cowboy nickel.

I agree and I thought Spencer played a hell of a game. Much more 'sudden' then he had been in the week prior..

He is probably our hardest tackler too...consistently crushes people.. I think he is a good player and will get better as the season goes...

Why do you believe that? After five plays your are ready to pencil him in? Are you sure?

Looks like we lucked out on Butler. Rookies don't just walk in for 5 plays and walk out with two sacks and a FF. He proved that he can at least be a situational rusher and provide good rest for Spencer.

I also saw Octavien get a really good jump on one play but the refs blew the whistle. I can't remember why they stopped the play, but Octavien had beaten the LT badly off the snap. If he can show that he will provide Ware with some rest, then we will be A-OK at OLB. That's without even talking about CuJo.

Now, all we need is to get J Williams back and let him take Carpenter's job as quickly as possible, and I think the defense will be set.

I tell ya what, Butler and Octavien were NOTICEABLY quicker when they came in the game. I'm not sure if was because Ware and Spencer were gassed but they were a good change of pace...

in 5 plays Butler looked like a better pass rusher then Spencer has shown his entire stay here in dallas...:p:

Octavien is a little beast himself...I like our youngsters:D :D :D

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ken, I think that you have figured out the problem. In so many words, I think Wade has been sayig he didn't know if he could trust Butler and Octavien to come in and properly do their jobs. This has led t Spencer and Ware being on the field for almost all of the defensive snaps. And, at the end of the 3 games, bothe Spencer and Ware look like they're going 3/4 speed. They have to be gassed. Get the 2 youngins in there more.

Don't get me wrong. I like a couple of our young LB'ers, but to believe they can handle all the responsibilities required to be an every down player at this point is a giant reach. Just my opinion. Ease them into the game plan and let them grow. Spencer has played well. He can cover RB's and run stop better than most. The pass rush will come (I hope).

I agree. Spencer has been just as good as Ware...nobody's calling for his replacement.

Curtis Johnson didn't see a defensive snap, and still managed to strain his already injured hamstring. I assume it must have been in special teams coverage.

Isn't Butler the one who asked his family members to help him learn plays while he was away from OTAs?

Yep... that was him. He's got his head screwed on straight.
