Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
Wade Phillips' Get Tough Plan is still being formed, but he shared some details with The Ticket's Norm Hitzges during an appearance this morning.
First of all, Phillips has to deal with this bad rep he somehow got for being a jolly guy. Sounds like the warm, fuzzy press conferences have come to an end.
"I don't think I'm as nice as what people think I am," Phillips said. "And I think I can be less nice to the media maybe. Maybe I'll start there."
Yep, that'll really get the players' attention. And it'll surely intimidate the evil media, halting all the criticism that has come Wade's way.
Wade acknowledged that he'd lose the team if he suddenly became "a phony tough guy," as Norm put it. Wade said he still won't berate or demean players.
"You just make consequences for certain things that you didn't have consequences for," he said. "That's what you do."
As far as the issues in the Cowboys' locker room -- which Terence Newman has harped about since the end of the season -- Wade thinks all that stuff is overblown. He reckons that's what happens when a team doesn't meet high expectations.
"Those words are big words," he said. "I mean, chemistry, discipline, all those things are a lot of buzzwords that I don't think people who aren't around football teams know a whole lot about. You know, I think our guys were together on trying to win, but we just didn't win enough."
In summary, Wade plans to be meaner to the media and have consequences for a few more things, but there's really no problems to address in the Valley Ranch locker room.
That'll turn the NFL's most underachieving team into Super Bowl contenders. Sure.
