I was able to run into Wade Phillips for quick conversation about some topics that have come up this off-season before he had to head into a session with his fellow coaches out here at the NFL Owners' Meetings

He is scheduled to speak formally on Wednesday at a NFC coaches' breakfast.

The topics ranged from Phillips serving as the de facto defensive coordinator, Brian Stewart's dismissal, Terrell Owens departure, his thoughts on Roy Williams (the receiver) and the free-agent signings.

Here we talk about the defensive coordinator move:

Stewart's firing was difficult for Phillips because he has such a close relationship with Stewart from their days together in San Diego. Stewart has yet to resurface in the NFL as an assistant but he will be paid through this season.

"It was something we had to do, so that's what we did," Phillips said. "He understood the whole thing and I kept him well-informed as to what was going on and what we were doing. I think he'll bounce back because he's a really good coach ... We've shown improvement on defense [the last two seasons] and Stew had a lot to do with that."

Phillips said "it wouldn't be fair to bring somebody in or move somebody up and have me basically do it," Phillips said, "so that's what we're doing."

Are there enough hours in the day?

"You see it more with offensive coaches but a lot of offensive head coaches are offensive coordinator," Phillips said. "I think it's possible to do on the defensive side also. Throughout the years a lot of guys had done it more offensively than defensively and that it's a little easier than defensively because you've got to make game decisions offensively some. So game-wise, I've got to be on top if it both ways, which is a little harder but as far as getting ready during the week it shouldn't change that much."

Sounds to me like Phillips wanted to keep Stewart, otherwise why admit to keeping him in the loop every step of the way? Usually, when you want someone gone, you simply cut communication, but Phillips stayed true to his friend, Stewart, and just carried our Jerry Jones' bidding.

I think Phillips also didn't like the embaressment it caused Stewart, of being demoted to defensive coordinator in name only. And Phillips clearly did not want that repeated in 2009, since Jerry Jones is basically forcing Phillips to call the defense, so that's why there no internal promotions to defensive coordinator.

But clearly, good or bad, this is a Jerry Jones move. Personally, I think it's good because it puts the team emphasis on the defense, and that's what wins championships. It also takes the safety net away from Jason Garrett; now, Garrett MUST prove himself on the offensive side of the ball, as he will be towing it all himself, with no players big enough to give him pre-madona-esque excuses.

This is why I don't think it's a big deal for Phillips to be his own DC. He doesn't really have a hand in the offensive preparation because that's not his area of expertise, so the only real difference for him will be staying more focused on the defense during games. Since his decisions concerning the offense during games mostly consists of deciding whether to go for it on fourth downs, I don't think this will take much away from his contributions.

Awesome.

I couldn't be happier with the fact that Phillips is going to be our defensive coordinator outright this year. We finally have pretty much his personnel that he needs and no more in-between to mess up the defensive calls.

We will be good defensively.

Now, if Garrett can do his job with the offense, and the new special teams coach can do his job... there isn't any reason why we shouldn't be a damn good team. Maybe not the defacto Super Bowl favorite or (thankfully) not the best on paper... but a very good team.

Garrett needs to put-up or shut-up; he needs to start living up to both of his "Offensive Coordinator" and "Assistant Head Coach" job responsibilites.

In the Daily Zone there's an article with more of this, and Wade says how Sensabaugh can play strong but he's a cover safety, so that will give us some versatility we haven't had.

That could just mean that Roy, Killa, and Watkins couldn't cover at all, but I think it means we're going to be able to throw all kinds of changeups at offenses that we couldn't before... Especially with Scandrick playing that hybrid cover/safety role, too. I still remember that SD/NE game where Brady threw all the picks... I think we're going to see more of that kind of confusion from opposing QBs this year.

So let me see if I got this...

Wade said some HC's run the offenses... so... he is going to be a HC that runs the defense

AND

Garrett the AHC his going to be the psuedo HC

Got it!

Brilliant!

I give credit to the Clown Wade Phillips for doing what he had to do. And that is firing an ill-equipped coach who was in over his head. You gotta love WAde for saying that Stewie was a really good coach and saying the defense improved every year under Stew. I guess then, that is a firing offense?
Well, good old fat cupcake Wade tried to put a good spin on it and, gawd darn it, it was endearing he could do that.
And WAde probably said all those nice things about Stewie with a straight face.:)

Wade Phillips: Defensive Coordinator & Head Coach
Jason Garrett: Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach
Jerry Jones: Team Owner, General Manager, & Executive Head Coach

See, it's simple. Now what if that wins us a Super Bowl?

we dont look as strong on paper...but neither has NE when they won SB's, or the Steelers, or giants

we dont need an all=star team...just chemistry, no distractions, and great coaching......

plz garret..Dont F this up

I like it, Wade has full control and full responsibility for the defense and Garrett has full control and full responsibility for the offense.

There is nobody left to take the blame (i.e. Stewart on defense and T.O. on offense for example).

If the defense blows, its all on Cupcake and likewise, if the offense blows it is all on Tecmo. Both of these guys were saved this year by others being "sacraficial lambs", but not this year.

Its all on Wade and Garrett, so if the team sucks this year we know without a doubt that these guys couldnt cut the mustard and it will be time to move on.

 You make it sound like Garrett went crying to the media each week! :)

Youre probably right but that is Phillip's MO, he doesnt have the stones to make the tough decisions and he let his personal feelings for Stewart get in the way of what was best for the TEAM. Wade should of taken a more active role on defense from the beginning and it shouldnt have taken JJ to make him do the right thing.

We saw it with roster moves as well with his unwillingness to bench Henry, even though the young corners were clearly out playing him (just to name one example).

2 coordinators and zero head coaches. Nice setup Jerry Jones has put together.

:laugh2: at all the people who are excited about Wade being DC. Remember the last 2 games of the season. He was then, too.

I didn't watch y'alls Philly game, but when WP took the duties back from Stewart your Defense stepped up like 3 notches. Sadly I would rather WP stay mainly as your HC, and let your D suffer.
Shaping up to be another tough year in the NFC East.

I think it had more to do with Newman coming back from injury which let us play more man to man rather then WP's doing

I agree. Starting the season we had Henry, Pacman who had not seen a football field in over a year and 2 rookies. It did not come as a suprise that Dallas would play more zone than man coverage. Once Newman got back and the rookies started showing a bit more I think it was much easier for Wade to call more bump and run coverage
