Stock Report

Calvin Watkins E-mail News tips

It's been a few days, so we've decided to update you on which players are doing well and not so well.

Stock Up

1. Bobby Carpenter. He's making plays against the run and pass in the nickel and base packages.

2. Kevin Burnett. He's healthy, quick around the ball and overall been great.

3. Evan Oglesby. The surprise of the camp. Leads the team in picks and continues to get pass breakups.

4. Miles Austin. Took T.O.'s spot in the lineup on Sunday and caught a touchdown pass.

5. Flozell Adams. Has been good all camp. Shutdown DeMarcus Ware on two pass drills on Sunday.

Stock Down

1. Richard Bartel. Needs to play a little more consistent. It's hard when he's not getting a lot of reps.

2. Quincy Butler. The corner's injury is slowing his progress. He targets today as his return.

3. Martellus Bennett. Too many drops and blocking is a little inconsistent.

4. Alan Ball. Nice start, but injury is putting him at risk of not making the squad.

5. Junior Siavii. Need to see more power from the nose guard. Not enough penetration.

I think Calvin Watkins stumbled onto a great concept piece with this stock report and up or down. He should keep with it throughout the whole Camp and maybe into the season.

I wish the morning news would hire a former NFL Scout of some kind to do this stuff.

Hopefully, he's getting info from coaches.

I don't trust his ability to grade practices.

Its pretty good but I think groo had the best review all camp.(its fallen to page 2) He uses the buy and sell concept and goes into greater detail. It was a great read.

I don't think Martellus Bennett's work ethic is what it needs to be.

How did you come to that conclusion? I have heard he is putting in the work at camp and has been following Witten around.

It's really just a measurement of whats been happening and his perceived mentality.

I'm not saying the guy doesn't have talent or anything like that, but a big-time work ethic and will to win are what make good, great. Think Emmitt, Michael, and Troy. Today look at TO, Romo, Witten, and Newman. They are all about work ethic and all about winning.

Maybe I'm wrong, but at this point I believe it's a valid question.

The coaches at least say that he's doing a good job and that its just a body language thing that the media is picking up on. Maybe they are just protecting their rookie for now, I don't know.

I don't know either. I don't see body language since I'm not actually there. While he maybe more talented that Fasano, we maybe at a disadvantage this season at TE with Fasano gone. It will just make Felix Jones that much more valuable as a threat, but it doesn't help run blocking.

Sorry, but Fasano was terrible. I don't know what the deal was with the guy, I expected a lot more and so did the Cowboys.

Terrible? He wasn't terrible, he just wasn't what they had hoped. Terrible TE was Eric Bjornson or David Lafluer.

I hope bennett can atleast improve his blocking so that he can get on the field for our 2 TE sets.

Posting this here, too...

Coach Wade Phillips on Sunday defended tight end Martellus Bennett, who has been criticized by some camp observers for seeming to lack the right body language and sense of urgency for a rookie.

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King delivered the latest shot at Bennett, writing on SI.com this past weekend that “Bennett does not impress me. He seems to sulk, and he’s not particularly energetic.”

Phillips, who also has been accused of being too laid back, said perception isn’t reality when it comes to Bennett, a second-round draft pick from Texas A&M.

“Some people are perceived that way,” Phillips said. “If they are kind of laid back, people don’t think they are really into it. I’ve been around people like that, but a lot of them have a lot of desire to do well, and I think he does.

“He executes the plays, and that’s the most important thing. He runs well. His blocking is getting better. He’s been a little inconsistent in catching the ball, but I think that will come.”

Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten said Bennett’s body language isn’t an issue with his teammates.

“I think naturally that his demeanor is a little bit, kind of laid back,” Witten said. “But (tight ends coach) John Garrett isn’t giving him much room to breath. (Bennett) understands that. And naturally he understands he’s got to be upbeat.”

With Witten given the day off Sunday by Phillips, Bennett got reps with the first team.
“He’s doing good,” Witten said. “He still has a long way to go as far as his speed and execution. But it was good for him to get in there some.”

John Garrett said he didn't have a problem with Bennett's body language in an interview, and in the next practice ....

C'mon Bennett: Heard TEs coach John Garrett getting on rookie Martellus Bennett to keep up his tempo and energy. This came when he was lagging back to the huddle.

I take most of what this coaching staff says with a grain of salt, because it's all sunshine and spin.

Eric Bjornson was much better than Fasano, and LaFluer was a lot better than Bjornson. David's problem was that he had an injured back. He had plenty of talent, intelligence, and motivation.
