What to look for Thursday

Wade Phillips won't say it, but it's highly unlikely many of the regulars will play in Thursday's preseason finale vs. Minnesota.

He doesn't want to risk players to injuries and wants to look at the younger players before Saturday's final cuts.

So with that in mind, I went back and looked at the play-by-play to see which starters played and did not play against the Vikings in the last preseason game of 2007:

DNP: Tony Romo, Julius Jones, Marion Barber, Ken Hamlin, Roy Williams, Anthony Henry, Bradie James, Kyle Kosier, Andre Gurode, Terrell Owens, Jason Witten, Patrick Crayton, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Ferguson and Chris Canty. Also, Terence Newman, Kevin Burnett, Terry Glenn and Greg Ellis sat because of injuries.

Three starters on offense played - Flozell Adams, Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo. Four (sort of) played on defense - Marcus Spears, Jay Ratliff, Akin Ayodele, Anthony Spencer. (Spencer is the sort of but he was the opening day starter last year)

I hope you didn't buy a ticket to the preseason finale planning to watch Adrian Peterson play. He'll be a spectator Thursday at Texas Stadium, and so will the rest of the Vikings starters, Minnesota coach Brad Childress told reporters today.

Wade Phillips is still playing it close to the vest, saying the Cowboys coaches haven't finalized plans regarding who would play and who would sit. But you can count on seeing a whole bunch of Richard Bartel and no Tony Romo.

Hed be insane to play any starter.

Agreed. The last pre-season game is the last chance for the "bubble" players to make an impression on the coaching staff. It can be described as a situation in which "guys go crazy", throwing themselves around like hookers at a convention, knowing that, if they didn't impress, they were gone. If you put your starters out there on Thursday, they're likely to get bitten by some fringe player.

Marcus Spears has already said he will not be sitting this game out.

And with our offensive line situation, some starters have to play if we want to look at Pat McQuistan at left guard.

Wade said Felix is going to play, he won't return kicks, but that wouldn't stop them from allowing him to do so week one. He said Pacman won't either, they know he can do it because he's impressed on punt returns.

I know we don't want to risk guys to injury in a meaningless contest, sometimes it's unavoidable at certain spots in order to evaluate questions about the roster.

I expect the OL to play for 2-4 series actually. It'll important to see WHO our LG will be and establish some rapport among the left side of the line before season start.

That sounds a little harsh. But I don't see where a lot need to play. Adam Jones does IMO. So does Hurd if you want to call him a starter. Bennett could be considered a starter. But I get your point.

But some fans in here "want" to see Felix Jones playing with the starters... how DARE Wade deny the dilettantes their heart's desire?? Doesn't he realize that his job is to keep the fans happy in preseason?? :D
