Where could Garrett go?

To follow up on Tim's post there, referencing Troy Aikman's ringing endorsement of Jason Garrett as a head coaching candidate, I think the question has to be posed: What team with a potential opening would be attractive enough to lure the 'Boys' OC away? Here are three:

CHARGERS: If Norv Turner can't get this team, at least, into Round 2 of the playoffs, he figures to incur the wrath of Charger management. Should San Diego drop the axe, I can't imagine there being many more attractive openings than this one, and I can't imagine the Chargers finding much of a better fit than Garrett. Make no mistake, this is a loaded roster, with most of its key components locked up through 2010. And if Garrett can work the same kind of magic with Phil Rivers that he has with Tony Romo, he can win a Super Bowl quickly. By quickly, I mean next year.

BENGALS: A lot has been made of the dearth of big-time quarterbacks in the NFL. Cincy's got one, and the Bengals have more than just that on offense. There's some potential instability on the offensive line coming, with several potential free agents, and there's a lot of work to do defensively. But the hardest part -- finding someone like Carson Palmer -- is already done. And Garrett, it's worth mentioning, has Ohio roots, having played his high school ball there. That's something that would certainly help him in the mind of owner Mike Brown, an Ohioan through and through.

RAVENS: Yes, the defense is aging. But there are quality, pieces in place and the personnel department there is outstanding -- Ozzie Newsome being among the best in the business. If this is the year that Brian Billick bites the dust, the Ravens would surely consider Garrett, who could find a way to fix the long-broken Baltimore offense. And it would have to be attractive to him, not just because of Newsome's track record, but also because the roster can quickly be reworked since the Ravens have a stable of young players behind their aging stars.

There's little question here that Jerry Jones wants in the worst way for Garrett to stick around and, when the time comes, ascend to the head coaching position with the Cowboys. But the trouble with that is that (and this isn't a novel concept) there are only 32 jobs out there, and no matter how much Jones likes Garrett, turning down a good one is, without question, a roll of the dice.

Now, this isn't exactly the first time a situation like this has reared its head. And there are cautionary tales in there.

Here's one I can remember. When Lou Holtz took the South Carolina job years ago, he brought his son Skip with him. Skip, then the head coach at then-I-AA UConn, went with the idea he would succeed his father at USC.

Well, when the time came for Lou to step down in 2004, a more attractive candidate became available. That'd be Steve Spurrier, who wound up taking the job. And Skip was left to grab an opening at East Carolina.

The Pirates have been OK since. Meanwhile, the team Holtz left -- UConn -- is now in a BCS conference with a brand-new stadium and a sparkling football complex. In short, it's a program with potential to get better and better. East Carolina? Well, they can be good. But in Conference USA, can you argue that's the kind of job UConn is now?

The lesson, I think, if you look too far into the future, you're betting on variables that can change. That's not to say Garrett should leave. It's just to say that if he's got a good job sitting there, and no indication that he's going to become the head man in Dallas anytime soon, he probably needs to take it. There's little question that if things stay the way they are now, he and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, 32, will be the two hottest young assistants on the '08 coaching market. And sometimes, you simply have to strike when the iron's hot, because anyone in the NFL will tell you, it can cool down in a hurry.

So Cowboys Blog turns it over to the readers here -- if you were Garrett, would you leave for one of the jobs above?

Oh, and by the way: Go Texas Tech, Go Iowa State, Go Ole Miss and Go Cincinnati. And please -- please -- keep the sorry Big 12 out of the national championship game (Yes, I know the Big 10's not much better, but it says here the Buckeyes would run roughshod over that league.)

the San Diego job would intrigue Garrett. I now find myself rooting for San Diego to get hot.

We seem to have a group of coaches that have won over this football team...let's keep all the pieces place for a while.;)

I really dont think they are going to be too many openings after this season. I dont think Lewis or Bellick are going anywhere. San Diego is a possibility but I bet they make a big play for Cowher or someone else with more experience.

Why would Garrett want to leave one of the best setups anyone could hope for?

So much YOUNG talent on this team and hes gonna jump ship to be a headcoach ASAP. I don't think so. Hes going to stay in Dallas because he has the foundation for a winning team and hes only a year or two away from taking over. Why jump to a team like the Bengals and Ravens who have holes all over.

If I was Garrett and I got a good head coach offer, I'd tell JJ to match the money and I'll stay 1 more year. After that he'd have to make a decision. If I was Jones, I'd want Garrett as the head coach in 2009 for that 1st game in the new stadium. I think thats been the plan all along but Phillips has the team at 8-1, which noone expected, and that changes things a bit.

I was always under the impression Jerry brought Jason in here for the sole purpose of becoming the HC.

why would he go there? They dont have an ideal owner/GM situation and if they run Norv after just one yr, a yr after firing a coach that won 13 games, no good coach in their right mind will go there

and Garrett/Norv are close

he isnt going there...he isnt going anywhere

totally agree...he has the perfect sitation here...great owner who will spend money, tremendous young QB who's already a star...great young talent everywhere on the roster...team about to move into the greatest facility in the history of sports...he also WANTED to come here to begin with

I don't see Billick in the Ravens' future plans. I think ownership has grown tired of the anemic offenses he's fielded since his arrival. He was hired by that club based on a resume suggesting him as an offensive mastermind. He has proven to be anything but.

Garrett would be a great fit for a team trying to establish a positive offensive identity to balance a defense that annually carries that team.

The Bengals are the only one of those 3 that I could see him even entertaining the thought because of Carson Palmer. The Chargers have talent, but Rivers isn't looking so hot these days. The Ravens are completely inept at the QB position. I think Garrett needs a good QB to pull off his offense.

There aren't many Romos out there.

I doubt seriously Jerry Jones let Garrett walk... He's being groomed to be the man in Dallas for a loooong time. ;)

if AJ Smith is really the power-hungry guy the media is portraying him to be, I don't think he'll want to hire Jason Garrett, who is an aggressive coach

it sucks that after a potentially very good season, we'll have a couple major questions to deal w/, but I'll wait till then and just enjoy the ride that is this 2007 season

Assistants and even coordinators have a funny way of picking up and leaving despite being in an ideal environment. I don't know what the future holds, but if Norv Turner and Dave Wannstedt can pick up and leave those early 1990 Cowboys teams...

Outstanding assistants have left what was believed to be Camelot year-in, year-out. That's what they do.

Like many of you, I pray JG stays somehow, some way. All I know is if I'm conducting an NFL coaching search, I'm not really interested in retreads. And we all understand Garrett is at or near the top the list of bright, young head coaching prospects.

If the Chargers make a change I expect the GM is fired and Schott is brought back.

If the Bengals make a change I suspect it is for Bill Cowher. The Bengals need defense and the 3-4 is all the rage now. They also need discipline.

The Ravens? That's not a good roster going forward. Old QB, Old OL, Old defensive stars.

I suspect Garrett will stick a bit and end up with either the Giants or Cowboys jobs. Sean Payton waited an extra year and it worked out wonderfully. The job he passed on was the Raiders.

I don't expect Garret to move next year either. You have to carefully consider the owner/GM as well as the team situation. Job openings rarely happen on good teams. He has a lot of history with Cowboys, and that may matter. I do expect him to get a raise though.

Cowboys Head Coach, or some other head coach.....you decide....

49ers.

they have a former no.1 overall pick at qb who is about to become a bust. a current head coach who talks better than he coaches. to make the matter worse, the head coach threw the qb under the bus, and it is highly unlikely they will ever kiss and make up. one of them has to go, and a head coach is easier to replace then the qb.

after all, he already traded away his 1st and 4th to new england in a bonehead move. the 1st will be a top 5 this year, and the 4th was sent to oakland to bring randy moss to new england earlier this year.

And Garrett would want any part of that because???
