Just a note on these CBs... almost no CB's have been good from the start of their careers in the NFL. I wouldn't say it's as bad as some other positions like QB where no QB really hits their stride until at least their 2nd or 3rd season, but it's something to think about.

A lot of Cornerbacks play off thier superior athletic ability in college and then struggle when they get to the NFL and have to watch film and work on footwork to really succeed. So from that viewpoint, I wouldn't predict either guy to have a Pro-Bowl season right off the bat, so just be patient with these guys.
Two things:

1. Both Newman and Henry had really good 1st seasons in the NFL.
2. Phillips has stated (and it's conventional wisdom) that corner is the easiest position on defense to just step right in and contribute.

I disagree with Phillips then.

Rookie Corners are just not what you want out there on the field.

Adam Pacman Jones may be one of the worst rookie corners i've ever seen and he made a huge turn around.

Champ Bailey was pretty bad too.

Obviously, generalizations don't fit everyone everytime. Human beings don't function like that.

As for (2), I'm thinking he's talking about guys to plug into the system. Playing Corner in one scheme to another scheme is mostly the same. Sure, in some systems you'll play more read&react, play more cover or play more man, etc... but most corners who've been around have some success can do all those things. So they're very replaceable and you don't generally have to get guys who "fit into the system".

As opposed to many other positions where you have to either get guys who suit the system (just about every position) or have to develop some chemistry (passing game, O-lineman) as a group first.

Henry didnt play corner his rookie season.

Newman was the 6th pick in the draft.

Cromartie, Asomugha, Pacman, and Rolle are all examples of corners in recent years that took time to get going.

Last time I ever say this:

We should have taken Cason.

We all have our preferences. I wanted Charles in the second instead of Jones in the first.

In the end, we just have to root for the guys we got and hope that we're wrong.

I liked Cason too, but our scouts said Jenkins was the best cover corner in the draft. They were right about Newman when they said they had him graded as the best CB to come out in quite a few years.

From DallasCowboys.com:

2001: Henry had a breakout year as a fourth-round draft choice, ranking first in the AFC and tied for first in the NFL with 10 interceptions. In doing so, he became the first NFL rookie to lead the league in interceptions since 1995 (safety Orlando Thomas, Minnesota, nine). Henry saw action in 16 regular-season games with two starts and totaled 44 tackles, 10 interceptions for 177 yards and ranked second on the club with 10 passes defensed. He became the first player in club history to have three interceptions in two different games in the same season (vs. Detroit on Sept. 23 and at Baltimore on Nov. 18), and his 10 interceptions on the season tied a club record (10, Thom Darden, 1978) and set a club rookie mark (eight, Bobby Franklin, 1960). He also added 10 tackles as a key contributor on special teams. Henry saw action at corner in the nickel package in his NFL debut against Seattle (9/9). In the Browns 24-14 win over Detroit (9/23) in just his second NFL game, Henry tied the club's rookie record with three interceptions (Bobby Franklin, 12/11/60 vs. Chicago), returning the three thefts for 58 yards. He recorded five tackles and broke up a pass at Cincinnati (10/14). Against Baltimore (10/21), Henry recorded a season-high seven tackles and added his fourth interception of the season, intercepting Elvis Grbac and returning it 22 yards in a 24-14 win. He matched his season-high with seven tackles at Chicago (11/4). With three interceptions and two tackles at Baltimore (11/18), Henry garnered AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. It was the second time in 2001 he had recorded three picks in the same game, the first time that had been accomplished in the NFL in the same season since Cincinnati's David Fulcher in 1989 and the first NFL rookie to accomplish the feat since Bobby Ply of the 1962 Dallas Texans. In the Browns 18-0 shutout of Cincinnati (11/25), Henry logged two tackles. When the Browns opened in their nickel defensive package at New England (12/9), Henry earned his first NFL start and responded with six tackles. The following week he earned a start at right cornerback against Jacksonville (12/16) and matched his season-high with seven tackles, while also adding two interceptions. Late in the third quarter, he recorded a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown on a pass from Mark Brunell, tying a franchise record for the longest interception return in club history (Najee Mustafaa, vs. Miami, Oct. 10, 1993). In the regular season finale at Pittsburgh (1/6/02), Henry added his 10th interception of the year.
Lulz.

This is what happens to people that speak without having a clue as to what they're talking about.

Whats the advantage of playing off a WR?

This 1sr round pick was a first rounder and excels at bump and run and we are asking them to play 10yrds off the receivers?

Oh well....if that continues....I wouldnt play CB's in this systema alot of money

...an unsolicited mention from Emmitt:

"Dallas Cowboys is lucky to drafted Orthall Scandriss. He got the ability they needs to break on the ball and get to get to the doggone playoff!"

No Problem... just become an offensive tackle. Speed won't be an issue at all!

:p:

I went that road before. Unfortunately, at 6'1" and 178 lbs, I don't make much of a lineman.

You see I'm what you would call... unathletic.. :D Doesn't stop me from trying though...

Not every corner has the size and strength to jam receivers effectively or the athleticism and burst to recover, turn, and stay with a guy who can fight through the jam. If you're 5-10, 185, you're probably not going to slow down Plaxico Burress or Terrrell Owens at the line. Playing off gives the corner a little better view of the play unfolding to read and break on the ball. Some guys are better disrupting the receiver, other guys are better reading and reacting.

I on the other hand retired after I realized a 5.10 wasn't a good 40 time for a corner. :laugh2:

Particularly not when you're talkin' about 40 FEET... :D

I hope Scandrick can become a player, because I have a bad feeling about Jenkins ... and that's not based off a rookie mini-camp. I never understood why he was considered a Top 25 pick. What kind of Top 25 pick is benched in his junior year for the friggin Pappajohn.com Bowl? The last time we drafted a player highly that was benched that late in his college career was Tony Dixon.

With or without Adam Jones, I've got a very good feeling about our cornerback situation early on. Both rooks are very aggressive and can cover. That'll prove very beneficial when we're in nickel and dime defenses. Now, if we can get better inside LB pressure on the quarterback up the gut, this defense has a very good chance of being something special this fall.
we need pac man.....henry is circling the drain

Same here... I think a few of us (I know Chief is one) feel that way about Jenkins...

For some reason, I just smell some Derek Ross in him... Hopefully we're wrong.
