Commanders banking on soft-spoken, even-keeled Texas-ex Colt McCoy against Cowboys

WASHINGTON — The stretching that precedes NFL practices is rarely notable; it's 50-some players arrayed in rows, like crops in a field, loosening up before the hard work begins.

At Commanders Park on Wednesday, Colt McCoy slipped out of his designated spot among the trio of quarterbacks to stretch alongside center Kory Lichtensteiger. After exchanging a few words, he moved on to wide receiver Andre Roberts, speaking softly as they mimicked toe-touching windmills in tandem, then sidled up to the next offensive playmaker.

After nearly three years without starting an NFL game, McCoy, 28, had just six days to prepare for Washington's "Monday Night Football" clash at Dallas. He did his best to make the most of that time, cramming in all the face time and familiarity he could with teammates he had barely gotten to know since signing on as the Commanders' third-string quarterback this spring.

"I haven't spent a whole lot of time behind center with the starters until this week, so Kory is getting used to my cadence, getting used to the way I call plays, getting used to my snap count," explained McCoy, who's expected to be named Washington's starter shortly before Monday's kickoff at AT&T Stadium. "The receivers I went and talked to, I was just giving them a preview of, 'Here's what I want to see on this route.' Or 'If we get man-to-man, how are you going to run this route? If we get zone, how are you going to run that route?'

"Honestly, I think it's hard for the guys on offense to be on their third quarterback. They'd like a little consistency, too. So I just want to get that understanding of how we're going to do this."

McCoy's star turn as Washington's starting quarterback likely will be fleeting.

Dallas will legitimize themselves by beating up a weaker opponent. Great teams like the Broncos would beat the skins by 20+. Like the Pats did to the Jets yesterday.
If Dallas wins I will be happy of course, but they will prove themselves a SB contender, if they take care of business and smack the skins around tonight.

I think you mean like the Pats did to the Bears yesterday. But given how the Bears played, it was pretty easy to confuse them with the Jets!

Wins are tough enough to come by. And wins against a beat-down Sk*ns team when the Cowboys are playing well are still rarer than they ought to be. It seems like the natural progression is for us to start blowing out bad teams, but I think we formula we see is us playing our brand of offense and it being difficult to stop. And us playing sound defense to where the game eventually works its way into the bag. Every game we win doing what we do well, where they can't stop it, is better than a blowout as far as I'm concerned.

With the Commanders, we need to worry about holding onto the ball, and on taking it away. Because this is a team that's capable of moving the ball against anybody if they get the chance.

The Commanders WR's worry me quite a bit. They have a pretty good bunch. Hopefully McCoy won't be able to get them the ball consistently from the pressure we will give them. I expect Carter to blitz occasionally and be very good at it when he does.

If McCoy can get the ball to Garcon, Jackson, et al., this game will be a struggle.

That's my concern also. They still have some weapons on offense, and with Morris in the backfield. Which is why we need pressure on McCoy early. Need some sacks too. Get him rattled.
Their defense is banged up, and we should move the ball pretty easily. Hatcher will be motivated though. This is not a give me type game by no means.
I hope it is, but I go into all games thinking it will be a tough one. We should win, this is one of those win the ones you should win type games. But not taking it for granted.

The latter. He effectively destroyed all trade value he had going into the season. The Commanders QB situation couldn't have played out any better had I planned it myself.

:lmao2:

Right, going into the season they felt they had a great QB set up. Now they have nothing basically, so it seems.

I hope Washington is FDIC insured because they're going to need all the help they can get.

Scratch that. I do not give a damn about Washington.

The cries to draft Marcus Mariota have already begun by some Commander fans
