Dallas Cowboys defensive back Tyler Patmon catches a pass during a drill at training camp on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, in Oxnard, Calif. (Smiley N. Pool/The Dallas Morning News)

The Cowboys are entering their second week and everyone seems to be bullish about their prospects. But how about their players? Whose stock is rising? Whose is falling? We examine.

Stock Rising

Tyler Patmon, CB: Patmon’s name is now known across the nation after he took on Dez Bryant in a fight during practice Sunday. The two went at it for a while before things settled down. But the seeds for the altercation were sown when Patmon, a feisty second-year player, was given first-team snaps. In practice, Patmon has rarely ceded an inch and has been particularly good in one-on-one drills, where he has managed to make a few pass breakups. He is showing something, and the Cowboys have to like it.

Damien Wilson, LB: The Cowboys seem to feel pretty good about Damien Wilson, their rookie fourth-round pick. With Sean Lee not participating in team drills as he continues his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery, Wilson has benefited with additional reps. An active linebacker, he has shown flashes in practice and seems capable of making an impact just like second-year player Anthony Hitchens as a rookie. Hitchens, it should be noted, was a fourth-round choice, too.

Lance Dunbar, RB: Dunbar became a forgotten man last season, when DeMarco Murray was piling up yards on the way to becoming the NFL’s rushing champion. But the fourth-year veteran could reemerge this season. With Murray gone, the Cowboys should feature Dunbar more regularly in the passing game, as they have always intended. In Sunday’s practice, he showed what he could do on a nicely designed screen pass, where he ran free in open space for a big gain.

Moore: Are Cowboys setting dangerous precedent, or simply doing what's right for this year's team?
  • Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey on fight: 'Dez can be a hothead sometimes, but that's good'
  • Bob Sturm's Issues In Oxnard: What Cowboys must address at linebacker
  • Jerry Jones: Dez Bryant, Tyler Patmon fight didn't surprise me; 'That's good stuff'
  • Cowboys WR Dez Bryant throws several punches at CB Tyler Patmon in training camp fight that wouldn't end

It's really nice to see Patmon playing well. He was really good during preseason last year, and halfway decent during the regular season. If he could prove to be a reliable option at nickelback (Mo will most likely still be our starter but... yea), that would give us some options with Byron Jones playing all over the place.

Been dying for them to get Dunbar involved in the short passing game, it's just a matter of time and then BOOM!!!!!!!

Holy crap it is way too early. I've read about Romo throwing more INTs too, are we worried there?

He is a guy who is good in space
But he needs to be a more complete back
Hopefully he has worked on his blocking and he has to be able to run the ball between the tackles for those swing passes and screens to be there
If I was him I would have worked on and found me a role on special teams
ST's are a great way to get you on the field and if you can't be an effective blocker you can't be a 3rd down back
Not everyone has return skills but anyone can hustle down field and tackle
To me there is an art to being a return guy but covering kicks and punts is more about heart and desire

How does he compare to someone like Sproles? That's the role I see him in. I don't know much about how effective Sproles is as a blocker.

Gavin Escobar, TE: Escobar is entering his third season and has done little in his career thus far. That’s not always been his fault; he just hasn’t received many opportunities. But the former second-round pick hasn’t stood out. So far in training camp, he continues to hide in the background – making outsiders wonder if he will ever make an impact with the Cowboys

He lost me here. How exactly does a 6 foot 7 back up TE hide in the back ground?

Might be an opportunity for Vaughn or Weeden to step up and take that spot!!?

Also, The Cowboys know what a screen pass is? Huh....

I think punt returns is an art as well. It certainly helps to have the quicks and speed.

I've also heard that he's been running 2nd team.
— TE battles. It’s very early, but right now Gavin Escobar is running as the second tight end. When the first offensive unit was in the 12 package, with two tight ends, Escobar was the on-the-line Y, while Jason Witten was the move tight end F-back. When the second unit took the field, James Hanna manned the Y role while Escobar shifted into Witten’s role as the F. Escobar also did a lot of flexing into the slot when he worked as the one tight end in the 11, three receiver package.

Sproles I don't see as a great blocker but he blocks the right guy
That's the key, these smaller backs aren't usually powerful blockers but the most important thing is knowing who to block and sproles does that well
Sproles is a very good special teams player and that's really important
If you carry 3 rb's on game day it really helps if one of them can contribute on specials teams either as a return guy or cover guy

I'd like to see Escobar more involved. It is interesting to note they are using Witten as the F back. Boy, does he need the practice although to be fair he's gotten better the last few maybe just a couple of years. I'd like to see Escobar more in the role of the F and H back.

I think he means for someone as big as he is, he's not distinguishing himself. He doesn't jump out at you. He just lurks in the background.
