Yes, good grief. I'm poking fun at the fact that Dez seemed more transfixed by his monkey than Ross from Friends.

The Howard Cosell hashtag was thrown in there for those too dim enough to understand the humor and try to twist it into something unintentionally racist. It clearly was meant to imply that I'm NOT trying to make it a Cosell type reference.

I guess if you aren't old enough or knowledgeable enough to understand who Howard Cosell was and what he said, then this post should serve as the requisite disclaimer. If you aren't old enough to get the Ross from Friends reference, I can post a follow up disclaimer in case your name is Ross and you are upset.

I'm making fun of Dez's choice of pet. Not a race, not his lovely child, and not monkeys in general. I'm sure they are wonderful despite the occasional need to throw poop (that goes for my children at one point as well).

Then why bring it up at all? The fact that you thought enough about the Howard Cosell drama from decades ago should have been your indication to delete before posting. How was this thread even related to his choice of pet? There was a pet thread a few days ago, you know, the one about him donating money to a pet charity. Put your funny there. Don't bring that close to a thread about a person's child.

Cosell first used that reference on Mike Adamle who is white.

I've never seen Friends and don't really care about Howard Cossell. In the original post it clearly states that Dez jr is a six year old boy who was hanging out with his dad at the pro bowl. In your first post you said that you didn't click on the link because you assumed Dez jr was Dez's pet monkey. So making a comment that connects a 6 year old African American child to a pet monkey gives the impression that racism was an underlining theme. Again I'm not saying what your intentions were, I'm just saying what it sounded like and what my initial reaction was.

The first thing I thought of when referencing his pet monkey, was the actual monkey...but I also thought he got rid of the monkey? Back on topic, both Dez and Dez jr. looked like they were enjoying themselves, if the pro bowl is nothing more than a glorified scrimmage, then at least it's a great opportunity for players to share their passion of being pro-football players with their families in a fun non stressful no pressure setting...

This really could've been a fun thread... Let's try to make it about DJ vs somebody's poor attempt at humor.
I agree, let's get it back on track. I just want to say one last thing. If I made it seem like I was calling @ikelly a racist then I did not communicate effectively. I am in no way, shape of form calling ikelly a racist. So if that is how it came across I apologize. I'm a white dude who works as a therapist with underprivileged kids and families, mostly African American, so I may be a tad sensitive to things of this nature given the job I do and my passion for my kids that I work with. So on a personal level with me it struck a nerve cuz it goes against everything I work against and believe in.

So to wrap this up and this will be the last post I talk about it, I do not believe or am calling anyone racist, my reaction to that comment was unfavorable but I believe him when he says he didn't mean anything by it and I hope he accepts my apology if he read my comments as accusatory. I don't want any hard feelings on this board based on unintentional things.

So back to Dez jr. Just think how fun it would be to be his son and get to hang out on the sidelines with NFL players during the pro bowl. Lucky kid. He already has the X down. Man if I was Dez and had a son like him, every TD catch I made he would be getting the game ball to keep for the future.

If the biggest problem in the world is that somebody used Pepe the Frog as their message board Avatar, then the world would be in pretty good shape.

A world with free and unchecked displays of racist symbols. Yeah, no problem.

Good grief, he was making a joke and everybody knows he was referencing the actual pet monkey, not the kid.

It never crossed my mind that it was somehow a racist statement.

I hate to see anyone have to get offended if a comment is obviously intentionally inflammatory, but seriously, sometimes people are just looking for stuff to get offended over. As a lawyer I have been called all sorts of things by people who are really trying to intentionally offend me and they never really seem to get it done because I really don't care what anyone thinks about me.

Really dude?

You don't think that maybe he wants better for his kids? I don't think money has anything to do with it... Lame response

Dez has more kids than Dez Jr. Please don't think for one second he'd be the same person / have the same opportunity without the spoils football has provided him. He would not have "broken the cycle" otherwise, and that is not a knock on him -- you're the one who brought politics into it :lmao2:

To be very clear...and while I could take it much deeper than this thread, the "joke" wasn't funny. Not a single person thought it was. Whether I'm offended, which I'm not, is irrelevant. It wasn't funny. No chuckle, haha, giggle, or nothing.

And really, implying in any way an African-American kid is a monkey is poor taste. People should think before posting. This isn't your local barbershop or the poker table with your friends. People should be mindful that CZ is a diverse community and the posts should reflect that. I work really hard, as a poster, not admin, at trying not to offend simply because it makes for a better posting community. People should take that into consideration, as well.

:hammer:
Do you think these people care about diversity? If they had their way we would all be straight from the same assembly line.
