I don't know of very many people that feel Gosselin is adequate in his current role. I wish they would move him back to covering the draft full-time. He was so knowledgeable when he was in that capacity.

Great on his draft analysis, horrible on most everything else. I say most, because once in a while, he's like the blind squirrel and does find a nut at times.
Like he said, need to use the 1st 2 or 3 picks on defense, and guys that contribute right away. Or however he worded it.

I don't seek out his articles to read nor listen to him on Norm anymore, unless nothing else is on, or it's posted on here.

The Cowboys need significant upgrades on defense, that can't be disputed. But Goose's take that "the Cowboys could not have won a Super Bowl with their defense last year" just isnt true. NE had the 13 rated defense in the league, there wasnt one thing that stood out about their unit. Dallas was ranked 19th. The days of needing a dominant defense to win it all are dead. You have to play decent defense and force turnovers (that's been relevant forever), but needing a top 5 or even a top 10 defense in this day and age of offense is nice, but isnt an end all be all.

Goose writes about the NFL like its 1985.

There's no way the Cowboys could've beaten the Patriots with Dallas defense last year. Brady would've hung at least 50 on em.

A bit "inflated" on that number I think. One can think that, but I disagree.

My only argument to those who worry about future cap space need to realize we will have a future after romo where it will be a damn near full rebuild mode...

you wont be paying much of anyone big checks.... In about 5years the only big checks on the book should be our oline, dez and maybe we finally found a stud on Defense thats making big bucks....

yes, despite not one offense being able to generate 35 against the Cowboys in 18 games, Brady would have "hung at least 50 on em." Now, Brady is great, but outside of Gronk, what NE weapon scares a defense?

Ok, 60. No way we could've stopped them unless we over inflated the balls.

Why can't you fix the defense on the cheap? If you draft well, you certainly can.

And what does "fix" mean anyway? Average? Is that fixed? Because with an average defense this team would have been a nightmare to deal with last season.

Per NFL.com Dallas had the number 11 defense in football. We might argue stats, as some do here, but the over-all was they were number 11.

Fix in this instance is moving into the top 7 perhaps. If the offense stays static as far as players, which relates to similar success, then moving four slots toward the top may be enough to seal the deal.

Can the team accomplish this with the draft alone? Don't know. But I believe this team can get to where they need to be to keep the offense intact and to add to the defense in both the draft and in FA.

Will that be enough? Stay tuned.

I agree with Goose that we couldn't win a SB with our defense from last year. We played a one legged Rodgers! If Rodgers were healthy the score wouldn't have been that close. The D was average at best on the back end and awful on the front 4. The lack of pass rush was more evident the deeper you go in the playoffs.
I give Dallas chance of beating NE about 25%. And that's because of our offense. Brady would have shredded this defense with 5 seconds in the pocket.
Defense still wins championships. That's not changing any time soon. Seattle, Baltimore, Pitt, NY Giants....sure you can get a few exceptions but top end D will make your life much easier.

I think O wins championships but you must have a good to better D and your D needs to step up in the playoffs. We don't have that yet.

We could have won the Super Bowl with this defense, but we'd have had to make it through four postseason games without facing an elite offense, or we'd have had to hope that the defense could turn in the same kind of performances that it had against the better offenses we faced before Green Bay.

The Patriots' defense was decidedly better than the Cowboys' defense.

defense
points per drive

Sea 2nd
NE 8th
Dal 16th

The above stat is the best measuring stick for a defense. The following stats played major roles in those rankings.

Net Yards/Pass Attempt Allowed (includes sack yardage)
3rd Seahawks 5.5
13th Patriots 6.2
27th Cowboys 6.9

TD per Drive Allowed
2nd Seahawks .152
5th Patriots .170
23rd Cowboys .230

Rushing TD Allowed
2nd Patriots 6
5th Seahawks 8
31st Cowboys 18

While we could have won it all with the defense as it was, we'd really improve our chances by at least getting into the top 10 in points per drive. We need to cut that number of 18 rushing TD in half without giving up more passing TD. We also need to get that yards per pass attempt ranking up. Coming into the season, we said a top 20 defense would get us into the postseason, and that's exactly what happened. If 2014 was about getting up off the mat, 2015 needs to be about throwing some punches.

I feel pretty confident that the Cowboys will keep this core group together. I see Romo and Garrett pushing for Demarco and in the end I think a deal will get done.

Yeah I agree. I've done a complete 180 on this. I believe Murray and Bryant are back. McClain very likely will be re-signed. They will look to make 2 or 3 more Mincey/McClain type additions to the DL and continue to use the model of drafting to upgrade the talent level of the team, NOT free agency, probably with more of the focus on defense this year.

We weren't ranked 11th in either points or yards. 15th in points, 19th in yards. 16th in the most important stat, which is points per drive. And assuming you don't face the league's easiest schedule again, and don't lead the NFL in takeaways per drive again, it's a bigger fix than that.

Red Zone TD Allowed
Seahawks 4th
Patriots 8th
Cowboys 23rd

I could make a long list of areas where the defense improved over 2013, but despite these improvements, we're still only halfway there.

You mean like the Saints were going to hang 50 on us? How about the Packers? Remember when we were going to get slaughtered in Seattle. Oh yea, I forgot how Luck (a "real QB") was going to slice this defense to shreds. Dumb *** projections are just that: dumb.

Damn near full rebuild mode after Romo? I'm not buying that at all.

Must you be reminded the gap we had in between romo and aikman???

We're going to need to find a new QB and unless we hit rock bottom and go 2-14 and get a second coming of Andrew luck at 1st pick were going to be in rebuild

Investing too much in any one player will cost this team.

If Dez wants Megatron money, then someone else can pay it to him.

Let's get some depth and build a TEAM...

I completely agree with Gosselin and love that people are crapping on him for telling the truth.

Teams that overpay wide receivers feel it else where on their team.

The highest paid wide receiver in the final four this year was Jordy Nelson at 9.7 million.

Unless I'm missing something, the next highest paid WR in the final 8 was Danny Amendola at 5.7 million per year (and he is almost certainly being cut this off season or taking a pay cut). The next is Emmanuel Sanders at 5 million per year.

To pay a WR around 15 million dollars a year... That's the price of 3-5 major contributors... It just doesn't make sense.

In five previous SBs NE scored 21.4 ppg. They topped 30 once (32 vs Carolina). Since they put up 28 on Sea they probably would have put up 35+ vs Dallas. But the way Lynch ran all over NE leads me to think the Cowboys would have scored in the mid to high 30s also. It would have come down to the Cowboys outgunning Brady & Co. I would have zero confidence in the Cowboys D in that match-up.
