Gosselin: Jerry Jones will not hand Cowboys over until he wins his own championship

http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***/archives/2010/10/gosselin-jerry-jones-will-not.html

The Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin chatted with fans on Thursday and answered questions about the Cowboys and the issues they're facing. Here are some highlights:

Is there a reason Tashard Choice is not playing? I think he is a better back than Marion Barber. Choice is faster through the hole and would be a better chance with Felix Jones.

Barber gives the Cowboys power and Jones speed. Those are two game-breaking dimensions. The Cowboys have always been attracted to the game-breaking-type players. Choice may be the most complete back of all three but doesn't offer a dynamic element like Barber and Jones. I doesn't matter to me which one they choose -- just pick a guy and ride him. Give whoever it is 20 carries and establish a running game. That speeds up the game and also opens the play-action for Romo.

Does impending lockout in 2011 guarantee that Wade Phillips won't be dismissed before the end of the season?

I see Wade finishing out the season. Jerry is very comfortable with the organizational structure with Wade. Wade has no ego. Jerry has enough for both men. If the Cowboys fail to make the playoffs, I believe Jerry will make a change. This team had Super-Bowl-or-bust aspirations. But an interim coach doesn't solve anything. Only one interim coach ever righted a team and took it to a championship -- Wally Lemm with the Houston Oilers in 1961. There have been about 70 interim coaches since then who haven't made a difference.

How is it possible that Eli Manning has already won a Super Bowl but Tony Romo is a consistently better performer?

The Giants have played better defense than the Cowboys. New York ranks second in the NFL in defense this season. The Cowboys rank fourth. More importantly, the Giants have already forced 14 turnovers. The Cowboys have forced only four. If Eli makes a mistake, the Giants are there to bail him out. They'll get the ball back. To date, the Cowboys haven't for Romo. The quarterback has the spotlight but it's a team game. Defense still win championships. The Giants have been playing defense at a championship level. The Cowboys haven't.

If Roy Williams maintains his current pace, has he earned a roster spot for next year? What has changed?

I wrote about this last summer. I thought if ever Roy Williams was going to have a quality season in Dallas it would be this one because, for the first time in his life, he would have to earn his playing time. Roy was the star in high school at Odessa Permian, the star at the University of Texas and his draft standing afforded him star status in Detroit.

Even when the Cowboys traded for him it was with the idea that he would be their lead receiver. But with his slump of last year and the arrival of Dez Bryant, Williams was going to have to win a starting spot -- and keep making plays to hold onto that spot. He's done that. I think Roy Williams can be a contributing member of a playoff team. For the first time in his life, he understands what's at stake.

If and when Stephen Jones takes over for his father, do you think he will be as "hands on" as Jerry? Will he hire a GM?

The question isn't if. It's when. That's the master plan. But I don't think that happens until Jerry wins another Super Bowl as a GM. Jimmy got credit for the first three -- even though Barry Switzer coached the last one. That team was built by Jimmy through the draft from his knowledge of the college players. He was drafting the same blue-chip players he once recruited at Miami . I think Jerry believes he still needs to earn his spurs as a football guy. His thumb prints are all over this team -- from the drafting of DeMarcus Ware and Dez Bryant, to the trading for Roy Williams, to the signing of Leonard Davis in free agency. If and when the Cowboys win another Super Bowl, Jerry will be first in line for the credit. And rightfully so. I don't think Stephen gets his turn in the saddle until the Cowboys win another championship...

If that's the case there are some fans here who will just be so upset by that sort of opinion it might cause them to dive into a near stake of complete hatred of the team, as opposed the partial hatred some seem to display.

I can wait it out. I'm way younger than Jerry. It's the old guys around here
this sucks for.:laugh1:

Sheesh, I guess we've got another 20 years to go then. Stephen will take over when Jerry is physically unable, cause Jerry aint winning a SB with himself in charge.

Thanks a lot Dave.

I posted earlier this week that I need to take better care of myself in order to outlive Jerry. I'm only 16 years younger than him so I've got a good shot at it. :D

Yeah I don't think Stephen takes over anytime soon

Jerry will run things as long as he's physically able to and has the mental capacity to make decisions.

Thump...I'm thinking that I'm within five. But I'm not having sweating rushes on subject at all. Must have something to do with point of reference, as to extremes of anguish and an association of gloom. That, or not having observed how he actually responds to failures at some point in his team. Those things can be learned by Stephen as well. But to the better...

And there is the answer to the question that has been only asked a million times around here.

Has he ever had this?

So.....what you're saying is that he could quit today?

The Stealers should have about 10 Superbowl titles total by that time. Thanks Jerry!

Three key words that will go largely ignored. This is his opinion folks. Is he right? No one knows. Not him, not me, not you.

Well there goes myself seeing another Dallas championship because Jerry Jones will live forever..

Well, that should be motivation enough for us to win it all this year !

Al Davis has lost his mental capacity since the mid 1990's. You still see him calling the shots. Jerry will be the same.

Heck, Al Davis would demand to be pulled out of his casket, dressed up, and sitting in his normal place on draft days and game days even after his time passes.

Why is this falsehood put out there by talking heads over and over again? Why do these people think that they know better than the Cowboys?
Now here's the better question.....If Choice was the best RB, why is he not starting?
Does he really think the Cowboys would purposely keep their best RB on the bench?

Now I'm not professing to be an expert here, but from what I've seen, Choice is by far the least effective pass blocker of the three.

Remember, Roy Williams should be made an OLB in the 34.

And yeah -- Barber's power is a real "game-breaker".

Unfortunately for Goose, this is one of the 50 weeks he's still a moron.
