DMN JJT Blog: Danny Amendola's travails as a gunner

That comment alone shows how little he knows about football! JMO!!

Wrong - at 5-11 180 he is small, but as evidenced by getting rag dolled he is not NFL strong enough yet. Lets also overlook his 4.7 speed. Our Punt return unit gave up 20 yards a return last game and AmenDallesboya was right in the middle of it.

Nice lil camp story - time to move along

Special teams will probably define final 53. This is the weak link on the team and an area that the coaches will likely focus effort and final picks.

So CB and LB will probably have a leg up on WR for final slots. But we will have to wait to see how the final preseason games go.....so far, the ST have really sucked.

And rather than overstocking players to fix the special teams mess, maybe they should taake a look at the real problem and see if their are any free agent coaches to be had?

:insane:

But Martellus Bennett has great size and all the talent in the world. How's that working out?

Steve Tasker: 5-9, 185

One of the best ever.

I realize Tasker may be the exception, but someday people are going to realize that the measuring tape isn't everything ... that Mike Singletary and Zach Thomas being under 6-0 is ok ... that Wes Welker doesn't have to be 6-0 ... that Tom Brady doesn't have to run the 40 under 5.0 seconds.

Amendola might not make it, but writing off guys quickly because of their height or weight or 40 speed is a mistake that has been happening for many years.

I guess it will continue.

So Because of Steve Tasker every smaller football player is going to be ProBowl special teamers? Amendola is in over his head in the NFL. Just listen and take it all in. I tried to break this in a few weeks ago - lol

Amendola is the same size as Steve Tasker, whom many consider the greatest special teams player ever... So the point about size should go out the window.

Lol - read Amendola's draft weaknesses - They are coming out in spades.

Coaches don't play Stash. You can't coach up someone who can't do the job for anyone. I'm not saying that's the problem here but it's more likely than Wade having a ST coach who sucks at his job.

But why? Because of the situation? The Player? Because he played basketball?

There are reasons to dislike Bennett.
IIRC, Roshi was one of the first to point out tht Bennett would be good for a quote, but that Bennett's immaturity would be his undoing. I don't know the root of his issues with Bennett other than that. I'm sure he can speak on it better than me. I just know that he was one of the first to have issues with him.

The dislike for Bennett are based on the fact that some didn't like the pick, he had some poor practices, the Peter King observation, all of which were backdoored by Hard Knocks.

Fact is, up until the preseason game against the Chargers, few people had a legit reason to dislike this kid...and employing the 'I hate him because you guys have elevated him to a god-like status' is BS. No one did, his detractors just declared it so.
I personally don't have a bone to pick in this fight. I'm waiting to see how he progresses on the field.

I think the Amendola debate is more to do with the members on the board than any real issues with the player. Both sides of the issue are sensitive to the Amendola hype.

Negatives: Looks more like a kicker than a receiver with a thin build, short arms and small hands. ... Can lose concentration over the middle if in the presence of physical safeties. ... Won't worry many corners or safeties with his blocking, although he gives good effort. ... Lacks the upper body strength to sustain those blocks or get off press coverage. ... Is not explosive with the ball in his hands, getting a quick burst but lacking a second gear after the reception or on punt returns.

The real killer stats from combine. 8' 7 long jump and 27.5 Vert jump
That is so/so for oline and usually an indicator of lack of natural strength and explosion.

Shouldn't you be out trumpeting the 'big John Lynch signing'?

So basically, he needs to get stronger. Gotcha. Never heard of rookies needing strength training before. No one could've grasped that one without you're help Nors. You're truly an assh...er... asset to this forum.

Fair enough. I'm pretty much getting over it myself. It looks like he's overwhelmed now. I think that fumble shook him up, as I haven't heard anything positive about him during practices since.

He's got a game or two to prove everyone wrong, but it's no giant loss either way. We'll be fine with or without him.

It's the needless hate that bugs me.

I am glad that Rudy has a following because I liked the movie as much as the next guy. However, this is the bigs and more then likely he won't make the squad and when he is cut it won't be a blip on the NFL's radar.

That is my stance now but I reserve the right to change my mind based on his performance tomorrow night.

Same could be said for 'athletic QB' WR's and 'ex-baller' TE's....and they're all equally useless....yet somehow evade your disapproval.

No, actually 6'3" guys who run 4.4 aren't a dime a dozen. God doesn't make many of them, that's why it's worth it to develop a raw one if you can. God makes a lot of short and slow guys, though, and always has. We've had several of them in the past that never got this much fan fare. It's just en vogue to overrate them right now because of the year Wes Welker is coming off of. If you stop the Wes Welker comparisons and compare him to a slow Tim Dwight, Amendola gets a whole lot less sexy.

Welker may very well find himself on another team's NFL roster, and everyone will point to how we let a good one get away, but what will be overlooked is that NFL team will be looking to upgrade over him as soon as they can.

Welker may very well find himself on another team's NFL roster, probably a bad one that is desperate for WRs, but that NFL team will be looking to upgrade over him as soon as they can.

That's cool. I just prefer football players to basketball players when I'm playing football. I also prefer WR's to QB's when I want a WR. Seems pretty en vogue to overrate big, fast guys, that can't play their position too.

The Amendola test - When I saw that 8'7 long jump that blew me away as crazy bad.

I dare all Zoners to do their own standing long jump and measure it! I am 43, 6' 180 lift some weights but mostly not in great shape. Having knocked down a few cold ones, in my Kitchen just went 8'2! First jump -lol

If he sucks so bad, why did TO say that he thought he'd make our team? And that if he didn't make ours, he'd make someone else's?

I don't care that much -- I never thought Amendola was special. But I don't see why some get so riled up because others are rooting for him.

Where exactly did you see that he had a 8'7" 'long' jump?

Not that it matters, but I'd like to see the link if you don't mind.

On a side note, I'm glad to see that you're so infatuated with Amendola that you're jumping around your kitchen with a tape measurer.
