DMN JJT Blog: Danny Amendola's travails as a gunner

If he sucks so bad, why did TO say that he thought he'd make our team? And that if he didn't make ours, he'd make someone else's?

I don't care that much -- I never thought Amendola was special. But I don't see why some get so riled up because others are rooting for him.
OTOH, I don't see why some get so riled because others aren't sold on him.

That goes both ways. Which is why the argument itself isn't about Amendola more so the individual posters.

I haven't even seen that many who are "sold" on him. No one has said he's going to be great, although the detractors love to act like everyone has.

If it were Daniel Polk, who's barely gotten a mention, that would be one thing. But the coaches and the players are saying DA looks like a player. What's wrong with fans picking up on that?

Hey, I've said from the beginning that there's a better chance that Amendola turns out to be the next Richmond Flowers instead of the next Welker.

That being said, he's getting more positive comments from coaches and players than Flowers ever did. That's not hype, those are views of people who are there. I'm pulling for him to make the team, because if he eventually plays anything like Welker, it will be a plus for our team.

Besides I keep trying to hijack this thread and turn into a Stanback thread and no one is biting!

This is true.

However, one side remains fairly level headed, simply hoping he makes the team, while the other goes to every extreme imaginable to deface the other (and the player himself). Every statement with 'Amendola', 'starter', 'hof', 'savior', 'hero', and the like in the same sentence....has been made by a detractor. None of those terms have been used by his supporters in the same context.

I'm not asking anyone to be 'sold' on him...I'm not even 'sold' on him.

I don't use this much but :hammer:

draftscout.com
can't link a pay site

I'm glad to see you haven't hurt yourself.

Draftscout? Is that the same place that has his 3-cone as tied for the best by any WR in the combine?

Hmmm.....I wonder which test is more important for WR's.

I don't know why I bother responding to you. You're too easy, and the mere fact that you hate this kid so much only strengthens my point.

I just call it like I see it with this player. No hate involved at all. Unfortunately we can't keep 80:)

Actually 4th at WR with many not listed on that drill. He was ranked #62 WR on their board and a UDFA grade. Spot on so far.

Unfortunately he appears not fast or strong enough to handle gunner and he has no Punt return role here....

Is this the same insight you used to peg Santos?

Mmmmkaaayy.

Unless Jones isn't reinstated.

...and he has some receiving skills, and can get stronger....so MAYBE he could make the roster. Spot on? That does happen right? UDFA's making the roster? I could swear I've heard of a few making teams before....

You're about as sharp as a bowling ball.

Not picking on Stanback, but if Amendola is a more polished receiver at this point, he should make the team. Stanback is still a work-in-progress and he's not contributing anything on special teams at this point either.

If those two factors are equal, play the guy who can better help you as a receiver.

Wrong....

If he's not going to see the field as WR, how can he help?

Will he supplant TO? Crayton? Hurd? Austin?

No.

Your fifth WR must contribute on STs. Stanback has that ability. Right now, he's better there than Amendola. Add that to his upside... Amendola is out, and Stanback is in.

Out of curiosity, how exactly does Stanback help on ST's?

He sucks at returning kicks from what I've seen so far.

See Tony Romo over Henson - LOL

Stick to football talk - insults don't prove your point. I have laid out why Amendola is a longshot to make this team. Odds are stacked against UDFA's. A few break through but a huge minority all in all.

"In" where exactly?

From everything I've read, Stanback isn't this team's kickoff returner, that job is going to Felix Jones and Austin.

You and I agree on this...and yet you still can't comprehend my point.

I'm just calling it how I see it too. ;)

True....but what happens if we don't want to risk Jones? Then Stanback will be back there with Austin. Amendola won't. Stanback my not play STs a whole lot....but he will be better help there than Amendola will.

The point is, Amendola...barring...you know what...will not see the field as a WR this season. He'll be inactive.

If he's inactive....then he isn't contributing as a WR.

Stanback may not field kicks...he will help some as a gunner (although he won't do it a lot)....and he has potential that frankly, Amendola doesn't have.

I like Amendola. I would love to see him make the team. If we keep six WRs, then I'd love to see us keep him. Just not over Stanback.

You are going to ride that prediction until the day you die.

Why don't you ever bring up the tons of predictions you made that were completely wrong?

If you have been talking for months about why he can't play in the NFL and you are so sold that your scout website is right on target with him, why do you keep leaving a slim chance that he makes the final 53? If he's as terrible as you say he is... shouldn't his odds approach zero? Shouldn't you be able to say that he isn't going to make it?

If you are that sure that he's that bad, how on Earth could he make the team?

Are you admitting that you might be wrong?
