Machota: The best training-camp battles thus far, plus your camp MVP

SportsDay's Jon Machota answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Do you think Dez is now the top receiver in the NFL or is it still Megatron?

Jon Machota: I think it's still Calvin Johnson but Dez Bryant is closing quickly. I want to see how a healthy Megatron plays in 2015 before I hand the crown to 88. I will say this though, don't think for one second that Dez wasn't working hard while skipping offseason workouts. He has hit the ground running during camp. When he's on the field, you have to watch every move. You just never know when he's going to turn in some type of highlight play. The thing I've noticed the most during this camp is how much more he's trying to haul passes in with one hand, fighting off the CB with the other. Tough to do for most WRs but Dez makes it look so natural.

Question: Which players have caught your eye so far?

Jon Machota: Offense: Dez, Beasley, Zack Martin, Tyron and rookie QB Jameill Showers. Defense: D. Lawrence, Hardy, Hitchens, Byron Jones, Patmon and Claiborne. The battles between Martin and Tyrone Crawford have been fantastic. Both go so hard that I'm kind of surprised they're able to avoid getting into a fight. Both just stop when the whistle blows. Very impressive. Tyron vs. Hardy has been great too. Tyron has probably been the MVP of camp so far. He's rotating off Hardy and Gregory and looking every bit an All-Pro on every rep. Showers has been everywhere on special teams and seems to be impressing many of the coaches. Lawrence has really embraced that left end spot. Doug Free has had his hands full with 90. Patmon, Claiborne and Jones are all making plays in one-on-one and team situations. That CB position is much deeper than a year ago.

It's great to hear some positive reviews of Claiborne. I've read a few blurbs about Showers being given various special teams roles but nothing about his performance as a QB. Are they trying to find a place for this player because he's a good athlete and can contribute or because they think he has some potential as a QB?

I heard it mentioned on one of the podcasts (I think) that they are just trying to find a place for him because of his athleticism.

Wonder if Showers has been tried at PR & KR yet. Maybe he can be an all purpose type player. KR, PR, RB, WR, emergency QB type player. Probably asking a for for an UDFA. but then again, if it's a way for him to make the team, and make the team better. Focus on back up QB first, then work him in at the other positions. KR & PR first.

Showers is a genius. He know he's not going to make the team as a QB, so he wants to play ST's. He said he hasn't played them since 7th grade!

I wish there was a way for Showers to grab the back up QB spot. Think he ends up on PS though.

Yep. Really that's the path for almost all players who are on the fringe.
Takes a ton of desire, but it's a well worn path.

Tyron Smith signed to a long term, team friendly deal. Let that sink in. He's a beast and still not as good as he will be.

By team friendly you mean the highest paid player at his position by AAV? Sure smaller guarantees but his base salary gets guaranteed every spring to free up some cap. And as his cap hit continues to grow he and his agent know that there will be a renegotiation sooner rather than later.

Still...couldn't be happier with him.

if Claiborne turns it all around and becomes a playa we need to call the Vatican so they can officially declare it a "miracle",,, holy smokes, that would be awesome!

Great question
Can he be the 3rd QB?
As just a special teams guy I don't think he makes the roster
But if he can be equal to Vaughn and do some things on special teams I think there could be a spot for him
To me Vaughn has to show some growth from last year to keep him on the roster

Sounds alot like Isiah Stanbeck? (Can't remember how to spell his name)

Thinking we keep two QB's this year with Showers on the PS to help simulate the read option
