You want Brooks Bollinger to start Sunday?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

It's understand if folks aren't real excited about watching Brad "Checkdown" Johnson operate the Cowboys' offense Sunday in the Meadowlands. It's not a good sign when the nicest thing you can say about a QB is that he didn't commit any turnovers.

However, it's hard to get real fired up about what Brooks Bollinger brings to the table. There's a reason Bollinger was unemployed at the beginning of the season.

Bollinger went 6-of-18 for 62 yards against the Cowboys in his last game action, the preseason finale and his swan song with the Vikings. He does have some starting experience, but it's not exactly of the encouraging variety. Bollinger's team lost eight of his 10 starts.

His stats from those starts:

14-of-28, 149 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT (13-3 loss to Ravens)

11-of-21, 98 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT (30-3 loss to Panthers)

4-of-5, 26 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT (27-0 loss to Broncos)

19-of-28, 251 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT (21-19 loss to Saints)

15-of-37, 135 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT (16-3 loss to Patriots)

14-of-26, 119 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT (26-10 win over Raiders)

28-of-42, 327 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT (24-20 loss to Jets)

11-of-19, 100 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT (31-21 loss to Patriots)

11-of-20, 153 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT (30-26 win over Bills)

16-of-26, 176 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT (34-0 loss to Packers)

143-of-252 (56.7 pct.), 1,534 yards, 5 TD, 7 INT

If Bollinger and Johnson were the same age, it would be no contest.

But Johnson's advanced age has really hindered his ability.

Actually Bollinger's line isn't as bad as what I thought it was.

Yikes. Some of those numbers are truly horrifying. My fear is that you'd get the Brooks that throws 4 picks in the game and sinks any hope you have of even being able to keep the game close.

As I have stated in other thread on this topic, I start Johnson and depending on how it goes will determine if Bollinger takes over.

If Bollinger had a real team in Minn, then we can compare. Let's see what he can do with some weapons on offense...

some of the numbers are bad but others are actually kinda decent not bad. also you gotta account that he's never played with an offense as talented as ours, he doesnt need to be superman we just need him to make simple throws that johnson has proved the last couple weeks that he just cant make anymore. we have no chance to win against the giants with johnson. at least with bollinger he's young enough that he has the arm to make more plays downfield just to keep a little pressure of barber having to do everything

If he had comparable talent around him and struggled, I could buy those numbers a bit more.

He didn't.

So I don't.

What I do know is the lame job that Brad Johnson having surrounding talent as good as any QB in this league.

It's one game anyway.

I'll take Bollinger and a slim chance over Johnson and no chance.

And that's exactly what it would be.

He wasn't throwing to TO and RW11, after handing off to Barber behind this O-line either in those games.

FWIW, only one of those starts (16 of 26 / 34-0 loss to the Packers) was from his career with Minny. That was from last season. In that game they gained 5.6 yards per pass throwing to Robert Ferguson, Bobby Wade and Aundrae Allison. Their problem was being 0-8 on third down. Also their defense gave up almost 500 yards of offense to the Packers.

The rest are Jets games, from what I can tell.

It is hard to believe the offense is going to be any less productive with Brooks Bollinger out there. Brad Johnson doesnt throw the ball down field often and the few times he does it hangs up in the air and is usually out of bounds. I could live with the checkdowns if he was actually completing a fairly high percentage of them.

So lets see it is hard to have the long substained drives because he isnt accurate and he cant throw down the field to make big plays. I dont see the upside.

Also keep in mind that those stats come from playing for truly garbage teams.

For instance that preseason game against us where he was 6-for-18. You'd have to think he was playing with the 2nd or 3rd string offense on the field. How many of those incomplete passes were drops by the receiver? Or how many were due to being hurried because of poor protection? The stats look very pedestrian but whats the context they were achieved in?

The question isn't whether or not he's a great or even good QB. The question is can he give the team a better chance to win the game next week in Brad Johnson's stead?

I'm betting that that will be the coaching staff's decision too. BJ will start the game and remain in it until he turns the ball over.

It's not going to matter if Johnson starts because with Flozell acting like a turnstile these days he will be injured at some point in the first quarter.

We will see Brooks Bollinger in NY at some point.

Flo does have problems with speed rushers that is not the giants game which is why I think more times than not Flo has done a good job vs NY.

Too many odds are against Bollinger starting.

- His first practice with the first string will be Wednesday. That's two and a half days worth of practice (5 hours or so) with the first team.

- The game is in the Meadowlands. Not the best place to get your first start as a newbie in the offense.

- The perfect game would've been against the Rams, but the chips didn't fall in our favor and the coaches had no idea how much suckage would be on display from Brad.

I'm for Bollinger to get the start. In fact, I would've guaranteed it if it wasn't for that "drive" at the end of the first half against TB. That glimmer of whatever gave Brad a chance to get another shot against the NYG.

143-of-252 (56.7 pct.), 1,534 yards, 5 TD, 7 INT

Bollinger has thrown 7 interceptions in 10 games; however, those numbers are somewhat skewed by a four interception performance against the Panthers.

If the Cowboys could get...

...this Bollinger: 19-of-28, 251 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT; or,

...this Bollinger: 28-of-42, 327 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT; or,

...this Bollinger: 11-of-20, 153 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT; or even,

...this Bollinger: 16-of-26, 176 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT,

...they might have a chance.

then WHY ARE EITHER OF THESE TWO CLOWNS IN DALLAS? We don't want to hear about how bad Bollinger is or how weak Brads arm is now...those things should have been figured out in the offseason....when there at least strong armed former starting QBs....like Leftwich available. Pitt was not afraid to bring Leftwich in. We have weapons...tons of them....but they are useless without the ball.
