Sturm: Scott Linehan's logic is making it easier to defend Cowboys

Special contributor Bob Sturm answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights:

Any thoughts or explanation for why Linehan's offense seemed allergic to throwing on first down or running on third down vs. New England?

Sturm: I think they fell in love with the idea that they could declare their intentions last year and nobody could slow them down. They probably thought that could be the plan for the indefinite future, too. This year things changed quickly and he is stuck in tendencies. I think calling a game is much more difficult than any of us could ever imagine and passing on 1st down probably feels like the thing that precedes 2nd and 10 with a backup QB. So, I understand his logic. I just think that logic is making the defenses job too easy.

How much will getting Randy Gregory back help the defense?

Sturm: Good question. He is young and raw and not great at everything right now. But, he is very good at jumping off the snap and dipping that shoulder to get to the QB which makes him very valuable. I think having him in select spots - 3rd downs and such - should be a great way for the team to collapse the pocket on QBs. The DL might be able to be the source of a playoff run. I mean that.

How impactful do you think Christine Michael could be if he got starter's touches?

Sturm: I think he can really help the team with his physical style and his juice. He is very athletic and when he is right he can be devastating. But, clearly, they have not rushed him out to the field. There could be a reason and there could be a reason that the Seahawks decided to move on as well. In fact, there is, if you listen to his old RB coach. So, while I want to see more of him, I am leery of those back story reasons.

What must Greg Hardy do to try and rectify his image? Is there anything he can do?

Sturm: I don't know. He seems to sort of enjoy the intimidating Defensive Lineman persona so I am not sure he is going to turn things around with many people. But, he is a great football player so if all of his future headlines are about football and great moments on the field, the rest eventually passes with time. We forgive as a society for most transgressions over time.

Bout time someone in the media starts calling them out for this.

you and me have been saying this since Romo went down, there is no Pro bowl QB to cover up for the playcalling dumbness. If i can call the plays coming then NFL DCs sure the hell can do better..

Might as well be Jason Garrett's logic since they are cut from the same cloth.

This will not be a case where the HC decides the OC doesn't know what he is doing and take charge.

Sounds like "anyone can run behind this line" to me.

It is one thing for the fan base fall victim to this kind of idiocy, but for this staff to do it is inexcusable.

They played NE like a punt was an acceptable outcome against a team scoring 30+ a game.

how about the Ginger settling for FGs with Brandon freaking Weeden at QB?

That is exactly ginger's problem. No guts, no glory. never goes off script , never acknowledges less talent needs inspirational play calling, trickery to even have a chance

I guess he is nostalgic from 90's when the boys can line up and dictate their will

This just in - it's not 2014. Stop play calling like it is.

Coward doesn't want to lose by too much so that he can preserve his insane salary.

I'm not defending the run on first down at all costs since teams are looking for it. There are reasons for it as long as we take advantage of it though.

It's clear. Our moto is to keep it simple and win with talent and not scheme. Hopefully they learned something from New England.

6-30 is big isn't it ? lol ... I get what you say , his salary doesn't justify one playoff year and one playoff win . But Jerry has his own ways , hope Stephen is more prudent GM when he takes the reins
