I'm not a fan of that at all. Teams are finding quarterbacks all over the drafts. Kap was a 2nd round pick. Andy Dalton....as inconsistent as he is was decent value in the 2nd round. Russ was a 4th rounder if i'm not mistaken. Meanwhile Matt Stafford, Sam Bradford, RGIII, Jamarcus Russell, Alex Smith etc. were all 1st or 2nd overall picks.

I believe a franchise that trades a grip of high value draft picks like 3 are setting their franchise back a few years and that's IF the quarterback pans out. IF it doesn't....you could be setting yourself back even further.

OK who taken after early in the second round has developed into a Franchise QB in the last 10 years. Or for that matter go back 20 years.

Guess what? The number can be counted on the fingers of ONE hand.

Kapernick is not a franchize QB. Might still get there but its doubtful. Wilson seems to be. So far. Outside of him show me a guy taken later then early second round who has made it?

So this BS of developing a QB is just that. The odds are about 20-1 against. The only way it might work was if you took a QB late every year and gave each one 3 years to develope- which means holding a couple of roster slots open for them that you could use on another position.

Do not want. The only guy on that list that intrigues me for Dallas is Grayson. I'd just as soon stick with Vaughan as most of those project players, myself.

When we invest in a QB, it's going to have to be a high pick. And then it ought to be a guy we think can already play in an NFL offense who just needs to work on learning the system and making good decisions at this level.

I would like to see Vaughan move up to #2 this year and just roll with 2 on the roster.

Shane Carden has a little Romo to him. He's not the most physically gifted guy out there, but he has been a very good college player.

It'd be a great sign if he could develop into that #2 role, I agree. If he does, that means we think he can read defenses relatively well and is developing. I think I'd still roll with a QB3, though, to hedge our bets until we're sure we have a Romo-replacement ready. Maybe knock one of those developmental OTs off the roster if we need another spot to make up for the ST loss of Harris (who filled more than one role for us on teams and offense last season).

I think it depends on the QB, I think there are some who have been more of a sure thing than others. I had no doubts with QB's like Aikman, Peyton, Luck and as well as some others who have and are still showing they are worth giving up picks to get them. Right now if I could have Luck and knew I would have to give up 2 1st rd picks to get him I would. Granted Cowboys would have to feel very strong about that QB before making that move

Ehh...I mean I see what you're saying. I guess what i'm saying is if I had the 1st overall pick i'd take a shot at a Luck. But it seems like when teams over trade for the 1st overall pick which is what happens it always comes back to bite them. Like if you look back at all of the great 1st overall QB's how many of them were traded? Off the top in recent memory I can think of RGIII who was the 2nd overall pick, Eli Manning and Mike Vick. It seems like the Aikman's, Peyton's and Lucks rarely EVER get traded. If I could trade 2 1st rounders for Luck coming out or a prospect of his caliber I would. But it usually takes more than that and plus it would depend on the pick we'd have.

I just don't see the logical move in doing it. The only way you could justify it is if you're simply a quarterback away but no one is essentially a QB away...not a rookie one anyway lol.

But I wouldn't shed much of a tear trading for a prospect like a Luck. I just think it wouldn't help your franchise out much.

Well I mean let's be for real here. How many top QB's have ended up being busts in the 1st round? How many QB's have been traded by a team on draft day and have gone on to have great success?

If the question becomes would I rather invest in a 2nd round QB over trading atleast 2 1st rounders for a quarterback? I'd chose the former. I've seen enough Jamarcus Russels, Matt Stafford's, Alex Smith's, Tim Couch's, Joey Harrington's, Sam Bradford's and RGIII's to know that there's a BIG probability of your quarterback not panning out and i'm not risking two or 3 starters for that.

I mean goodness....we're not that far removed from Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and Jake Locker being 1st round picks.

And i'm far more comfortable in having Kapernick as my quarterback than I am 95% of the league. Its not Kap's fault his offense sucks and the OC is even worse. Kap with the Cowboys would be a completely different animal.

All I can say is if as a GM you feel certain about a player especially the QB position then I think you take the risk to get him. There are some QB I would be willing to take that risk on. For me If I'm 100% sold on a QB then I do that I can to get him. In the case of Romo being replaced that could be something the Cowboys do when they feel they need to replace him. Guys like Vaughn in the meantime will be the guys they will work with and try to develop, maybe they hit maybe they don't if not then it would not be a shock nor would I have a problem on making a big move to get a top rated QB

If I had to take one, it would be Petty, but I don't like ANY of the quarterbacks in this draft. None.

Nowadays you have to pay the guy. You spend a first on a QB that is going to sit unless Romo is injured and you have to pay him. So you lose a first rounder and cap space for a guy to sit for the next 4-5 years which is the length of his contract.

I'm not going to do that until I see Romo down to a year or two. OR I'm drafting high and someone like Luck comes along.

I'd rather the team try and trade a 2nd or a 3rd to the pats for jimmy garoppolo if they truly want to find a successor to groom. Pats took him at 62 and our 2nd rnd pick is 60 iirc. Romo's replacement is not in this draft, maybe next year there is one worth drafting in the 2nd or 3rd

Remember how we got the guy we are talking about replacing? I think there is a strong chance Romo's successor is not a high round draft pick.

A walk-on!!!
you never know, those walk-ons could, in some places, win two career playoff wins!

Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but something tells me Dallas could be in a world of hurt when it comes to replacing Romo. I also don't like or am familiar with none of the QBs mentioned above, but on the bright side----as long as Dallas runs this type of offense, you don't need a Luck. But you do need someone like a Russell Wilson. Smart, mobile and plays within himself and keeps boneheaded plays to a minimum. Run your offense and feed the ball to your playmakers.

Not a fan of giving up a whole bunch of picks to move up into top round to get your franchise QB unless he is an almost sure thing like Luck----but you are not going to find too many of those and getting them is not as easy either. So looking for a Wilson may be easier than a Luck if you do your scouting. This is why they should draft some around the 3rd to 4th round if they like them and not wait til Romo goes down. We went through a bunch of stiffs before lucking into Romo.

Good points. I don't see the club moving in the direction but I was wrong once. :)

Thought I'd leave this in the Fan Zone for a time since there will be talk of Tony in the thread. It can be moved as you see fit.

I wouldn't draft another QB this year UNLESS I could bet someone after day two whom I thought could really learn under Tony and the rest and maybe be the guy down the road. On the other side of that coin is the fact I think Tony will play at a high level for 4-5 years. They may think it better to wait another year or three to draft a QB.

What ya think? How long will Tony play well? Can he beat the 38 year old blues?

Tony's blitz picker upper is no longer here. Until I see a RB prove otherwise, I am more concerned now than ever that he is going to get blasted on one of those cleverly disguised blitzes next year. Despite his controversial status around his untimely fumbles, Demarco did a rock solid job of quickly identifying and stoning the blitz last year. I don't need stat gurus. I saw it with my own two eyes.

Now, if we draft a Gurley (or some other quality RB early) and he proves to be that all around possibility at RB, I will find more ease in considering what the next two years will look like for ol Tony.

So, Jameis Winston wouldn't be on the Cowboys radar? Think of the discussion that could be had!
