DMN: Writer calls Dan Bailey's new deal 'Worst Contract of the Year'

It is a bad contract. For the salary cap hell the team is in to sign a kicker for over 3 mill a year is laughable.
In a couple of years his pay will be middle of the pack for kickers so it's not a bad deal. In the parity driven NFL where every point counts you need a great kicker and Bailey is one.

Not to mention he saves us a roster spot because we don't have to employ a kickoff kicker any more. :)

He's going to need to kick a lot of field goals to make up for a defense that can't stop any team. A defense that cannot be helped via FA but only via the draft because of these type contracts.

what is laughable is that you consider this contract laughable

Not my money. I am not paying the man. I am a free market capitalist though.
One man is worth what another man is willing to pay.

Good for Bailey. When he lines up for a FG. Its an automatic 3 points.

Like most other contracts, this is essentially only a 3 year deal. 4.9 mill is fully guaranteed, with the rest guaranteed if he's healthy in 2015 and 2016. If he gets hurt, he doesn't get the rest of the guaranteed cash. If he falls off, he can be cut with relatively little effect to the cap. The length of the deal is just to satisfy the agent, so he can say he got his guy this long of a contract for this much money. But it's really a 3 year deal, for about 7.5 million. If he's still performing well after that, and they want to keep him, then the contact gets restructured.

If your a contending team and your in alot of close games...then yes I agree the kicker would command that type of contract. But Dallas isn't that team and has major holes especially along DL. Denver and NE are contending teams who will go deep into playoffs pretty much yearly.

So you're saying we're not in a lot of close games...really? Go look at the average margin of win/losses over the last three years. Point taken about having a lot of holes but c'mon man!

That could very easily be a thread instead of an article.

In his mind, maybe we should pay all top players 100 grand a year. Unfortunately, you have to pay people, and sometimes you have to pay them a lot. Is the writer aware of this?

EDIT: I forgot to say stay on target....I mean topic. :D

Well I look at it as the boys paying for the convenience of knowing they dont have to worry about that position for the next 3-5 years, hopefully 7 years.

Never know how the UDF will react in an untested high pressure situation. We know what Bailey will do. Lets hope he does not flake out anytime soon (as all kickers seem to).

Worst contract for the the second best player on the team?

What I love about these types of threads..

So what IS a good and fair contract of a guy like Bailey?

Nobody argues about that.

Just what is wrong..yikes.

Nothing changes around here, huh?

Since when have we been helped by free agency anyway? I mean, how many free agents have we brought in that have significantly improved our team? There have been some who've made us better, but haven't helped turn us into a perennial playoff team. One of "these types of contracts" could apply to Brandon Carr. Has he been worth near the money Jerry paid him? Same goes for pretty much every team. You hit on one occasionally, but for every Michael Bennett and Wes Welker, there are 5-10 Albert Haynesworths and Nhamdi Asomughas. We signed a bunch of FA's year before last, and what did it get us? Carr, Orton, Connor, Livings, Bernadeau, etc. We picked up Durant and Allen this year. A couple bigger names, with a bunch of middle of the road players who were supposed to provide veteran leadership and depth. What has that done for us? Free agency can help your team, but by and large it is fool's gold.

I see nothing wrong with locking up one of your better players who's shown nothing but consistency....

So he means 2014 which has barely started, right? This doesnt even move the needle in comparison to some of the contracts Jerry has given out.
