Writer calls Dan Bailey's new deal 'Worst Contract of the Year'

Dallas Cowboys fans probably were relieved to see the team give reliable kicker Dan Bailey a contract extension.

Bailey, who received a seven-year, $22.5 million deal, was a bright spot for Dallas in its third straight 8-8 season.

But let's just say Grantland's NFL writer Bill Barnwell was not so enthusiastic about the deal, calling it the "Worst Contract of the Year."

I'm not sure why 3 mil a year is bad. Is there a lot of money guaranteed?

If Jerry would have let Bailey walk then these same writers would have blasted him if the Cowboys were to have kicking problems next year. He failed to mention Robbie Gould getting more money just a few weeks ago. He also failed to mention that the Cowboys would actually save 500k on the cap in 2014 with this deal. Once again this writer failed to mention that the 2015 cap is wide open for the Cowboys.

7.5 or so (around 4 mill and first two years of salary). Good bit of fluff in the last few years. (Around 10 mill jammed in last three). Had we tendered him at the 2nd round level, cap hit would be higher.

The writer is like lots of people on the board - no understanding of contract structure

Well, JJ has inked some horrific deals but to say this is one of them is kind of ignorant. Bailey has been money for what....3 seasons? I like the deal at this point.

The problem with JJ is that he has been so bad at being a GM for so long that anyone can dispute any move he makes at this point and what can you really say?

My initial take is that this is not a bad deal for the Cowboys. If this move had been made by the Patriots maybe it comes off as genius. But then that is the difference between the two organizations at this point. The Patriots have earned any benefit of the doubt they receive by the volume of terrific decisions they've made in the last decade, while the Cowboys most assuredly have not.

Gostkowski (NEP) is on the final year of 5 year 15.759 million deal. Gostkowski and Bailey were both 93% on their fg attempts.

$3 mil a year for a spot-on, money-man kicker is reasonable. How many Zendejas' do we need to go through again? Bailey "single-handedly" won us several games.

This is chump change. $16 mil for Ware, $10 mil for Carr, $12 mil for Romo ... those are your whales.

"Hey guys, I'm new! Somebody pay some attention to me!!!"
I agree with the sentiment, but that said he wasn't the only one who had that opinion.

As soon as news broke on twitter, national media were LOL'ing their lives away at the news, the numbers, and everything about it. Didn't make sense to me. Since it seems the contract is right in line with other kickers of his caliber.
