Free agency still an option for Cowboys but most likely at offensive tackle

The Cowboys entered the draft with needs at safety and left tackle. After two days of the draft, they still have those needs but owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team could fill a need in free agency, too.

Jones did not rule out the possibility of bringing Flozell Adams back to be a backup, but Adams is looking for a starter's role and would have that opportunity elsewhere. The most likely move would be getting a veteran backup line because Jones indicated they are at the point in the draft where the prospects are more developmental than contributors in 2010.

At safety, veteran like Darren Sharper is still available, although in the wrap up Friday, coach Wade Phillips sang the praises of Alan Ball, Mike Hamlin and Pat Watkins. Jones said there are some draftable guys at safety that could help in 2010 with the fourth round coming Saturday.

The Cowboys have not signed a free agent yet and have not so much as had a visitor.

"We've been looking at that before the draft and looking at who might draft [what] and what they might do and how it impacts guys that are not available [now] that will be available," Jones said. "They're always available. They've never not been available."

kind of the feeling I got, we need depth, that can be found after the teams cut down to fit the picks and the free agent pool fills up.

No, that was you touching yourself.

unlike you I don't have to touch myself.

But I do like it.

They would come at bargain prices also.

I too think our starting FS next season will be a FA, or acquired by trade. Atogwe-Sharper, we definitely want a proven player to be in position for this SB run

Damn Archer, why you want to quash a full fledged panic alarm with common sense thinking that has been common knowledge for the entire off season?

It would be kind of humorous if, three weeks from now, we have Otagwe/Sharper at free safety and a veteran backup or two along the offensive line in addition to two "non-need" draft picks who no one never imagined would fall to us.

I read where they exploited Sharper in the NO game. Plus hed be a rental.

If they passed so many times on him already I dont think theyll go to to him now when it might be too late

Darren Sharper would make the defense nasty.

Knee problems and age or not, I complete agree. Can you imagine adding a guy who intercepted like 10 balls last season to a defense that features the front 7 and corners we have? It seems like such a no-brainer, especially after not landing a starting-caliber safety in the draft.

I'd prefer Atogwe (not sure who this Otagwe is), because he is still fairly young.

I figured after they went for Lee in round 2 that we'd no doubt be filling the safety and OL needs via FA. I've got the feeling that we'll likely wind up with the safety from St. Louis and I really think we'll wind up with Flo back here as well.

I've said Sharper was too old for like 3-4 years now.

**** that. The guy can play.

worst case scenario the guy plays half the season gets injured and mentors the young guys the whole way through. Darren Sharper as a veteran mentor to a young guy like Ball or Hamlin would do wonders.

Agreed, it is common sense.

This year Jerry is waiting until after the draft before signing a few FAs whereas before, Jerry usually signed a few before the draft.

The timing change has thrown the panic buttoneers into extra panic.

It's not a bad option. We can't develop offensive linemen from the draft worth a damn anyway except for Gurode and Flozell. Everyone else was through free agency.

If we can't get Sharper, I wouldn't mind bringing back ol' Anthony Henry! Try him out at safety, if he sucks then oh well, we've got a 4th CB
