I loved the bitter rivalries.
I loved the stiff competition.
I loved having players that whole careers could be followed on one team,
I loved having to improve areas to compensate for one team or one player.
I loved seeing the players about the team instead of the dollar (somewhat).

That is dying everyday. Everyday I wonder which great or potentially great player wont be around next year, or which coach will get fired for having one bad year.

Dont get me wrong I love a lot of the things that the new NFL has to offer, but...

I miss the intense Cowboys-49ers rivalry of the early-mid 90s more than anything. I started watching football in '92 (I was 7) and that's when the rivalry started to heat up again.

I miss the old days when thugs like Sean Taylor would actually do time for the crime.

In the old days Taylor would have had his butt beaten, not treated the way things are today, ie suspension and fines.

As far as the old days, the NBA does business right. The NBA's CBA is set up so that teams are rewarded (or penalized) for your draft decisions. I wish the NFL had the same ideas.

The salary cap damaged the league as far as team camraderie goes. Guys these days end up playing for 2-3-4 teams, when back in the day, they were loyal to their team for their entire career for most part.

I think that has a definite effect on the rivalries. It's not the same as it it once was but it's stil the best sport there is.

Yes im still against the salary cap up to this day. I believe if the salary cap wasnt instituted, we would have won 2 or more titles during this period. Now its freaking New England that cant generate revenue trying to go for 3 straight. Away with the cap.

Bitter rivalries are STILL prevalent in most sports.. baseball, football etc...
Stiff competition is STILL there....
Players playing there whole careers with one team is one that I miss... in football, where guys like Bruce Smith ended up a Commander or Jerry Rice went all over the place and Emmitt to Zona- just aint right.... in Baseball the Yankees just signed Johnny Damon... I dont like it... but it is what it is... so we gotta deal with it if we are gonna follow sports...
The players about the team and the money... that is gone, long gone... and as much as I dont like it... it makes sense.... players make the owners lots of money so the players should make a good piece of the pie... its just business... you and I would do the same thing...

I do miss the good old days, and they were good in my opinion. Players now for the most part are mercenaries, with FA rules. I think we're also seeing a new breed of NFL ownership, and the TV contracts just appear to be more obscene each year. But, the NFL wanted parity and it's here.

But we still have one team every decade that wins three or four titles. That hasn't changed.

I miss the days when you built a team for years and could keep that team together for several years.

I have seen several of their players leave via FA. I think they do a very good job with keeping some key people but none the less they like every other team have lost some very good players. I'm just glad I got to see the NFL in it's glory days when teams were more like family than the rent a player league we see today or watching a team draft and developed a player just so another team can capitalize on someone else’s work.

I meant that they don't acquire a lot of FA's.

They seem to build from the draft.

Yes, they have lost FA's, but they don't pick up a lot.

I agree....completely.

Free agency, schedules based on strength of finish, the salary cap have all really diminished the product.

The idea was to make more $$$.

How was that accomplished?

By making the product enticing to more people.

How was that done?

Parity.

Parity made it possible for every team to win. That's the goal. Or so the NFL will say. But the truth is, the goal isnt parity, it's $$$$...and hey, that's ok, it's a business...but...

So, the fans in cities like NY, Oakland, Tampa, Tennessee, Atlanta, Baltimore, etc have all had a chance to root for their Super Bowl team and then watch them collapse within the next season or two. But the NFL is happy because they've drawn those casual fans in...even if for only a few short years.. this = $$$$$

For me, yeah, I'll take the "good old days". Dynasties being upset, truly upset by upstart organizations; the Jets knocking off the Colts in the Super Bowl; the Chiefs doing the same with the Vikings the next year.

Our Cowboys trying to unseat the Green Bay Packers and coming up short, was still better than this.

I dunno about you guys and gals but I look at Drew Bledsoe...Keyshawn...Terry Glenn...Jason Ferguson...and think "Who the hell are these guys?" Throw in Eddie George, Dedric Ward, Richie Anderson, Vinny etc and last year was the most difficult season I've ever had relating to a Cowboy team.

Continuity leads to personality. Teams had personalities. The Fearsome Foursome...The Purple People Eaters...Doomsday...The Steel Curtain...

Ah, whatever...

Not to mention better football.. particularly on offense. Obviously the longer a unit plays together the more proficient they should become (not so much on defense where it's more of a just swarm to the ball type deal).

Baseball doesnt have that kind of issue. Theres like zilch teamwork except for turning a double play.

Swap out a couple .300 hitters in baseball for 2 diff ones and it wont matter much. Swap out Irvin and Novacek for a couple players, even if they were comparable numberswise, and it would've made a difference because of the QB having to get used to them, new system, etc.
