Do I REALLY Need this TV For the Super Bowl?

My husband and I are both huge football fans, and having a party for the Super Bowl this year.

We are going to get a new TV tomorrow and he insists on getting this 60" Vizio plasma at Costco because it's on sale for about $2,000

I don't know anything about Vizio though... are they good TVs? I was thinking of getting something smaller and a more well-known brand.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

either go big or don't go at all. but seriously it's a good tv. a friend of mine has a big vizio(i think it's 40 something inches) and it's awesome especially in HD.

I don't own a Vizio, but a friend of mine bought a few of them for his recording studio--he says they're the best way to go for the money, and while I don't remember all the details, they're apparently made by either the same factory, or with the same components as one of the major brands.

Pros, good size/cost ratio, American made, quality is improving

Cons- failure rate said to be relatively high, picture isn't nearly as good as say Samsung, Pioneer, or Sharp. (much cheaper though)

I would resist and buy after the stupid bowl because there will be a price drop soon after, and again this summer(overall an expected 30% drop this yr)...buy a better brand. That's just me.

I've had a 50" Vizio plasma for over a year now, and I love it. In terms of bang for your buck you can't do better. One caveat - a tv that large looks best if your normal viewing location is at least 8-10 feet away. If your room isn't big enough to allow that you might want to think about going a little smaller.

Costco's a good way to go, though, because if anything goes wrong, they'll let you return almost anything for any reason.

Go for it!

I am wary of Plasma versus LCD.

Burn in potential, lots of electricity and limited life span, costly replacement.

The big thing about the TV that you need to worry about is if its a 720p or a 1080P. You want the 1080P if you are going to get one that big as the picture will be better. just find the cheapest 1080p you can if you don't care about the quality and features.

I have a 37" Samsung LCD that is only 720p, its nice. I am getting the Pioneer 60" 1080P plasma.....but that is a serious investment most people won't make.

1080i is less expensive and no difference unless you are watching a lot of fast sequence like movies. For football 1080i Is unbelievable!

If you buy plasma, there is only one name to know. Panasonic

My 50" Samsung Plasma begs to differ, got it at Sears last week, last year's model $1,199.

The life span is comparable to LCD, burn in potential not as bad as some people think, not sure what your talking about with costly replacement and if your worried about electricity buy a radio.

lmao...I was thinking the same thing. Uses too much juice? lmao.

The burn in is exaggerated by a great many people. I've come home to my roomie having left my Samsung FP-T5084 50" on a input selection screen for at least the length of my 10 hour work shift, and the burn in only lasted about ten minutes.

Plasma's are straight. Best performance for the dough.

While screen size is an issue - the most important factor in any HDTV's picture quality is it's "contrast ratio". The higher the contrast ratio - the better the picture quality. Bigger ain't necessarily better.

I have found one issue with my Plasma, it's like having a dearborn heater on all the time. Good grief, I knew they put off a lot of heat but damn, it was in the mid 70's today and it got flat out hot in the TV room even with the windows open.

Contrast ratio isn't really all that important. Because theres really no sure way to measure contrast ratio, companies just measure how they want and come up with some astronomical numbers like 100,000:1.

Not sayin that it isn't important at all but I wouldn't chose a 1000-2000 dollar TV based on it. Go with what looks best to you is what I think.
