What is stunning is that anyone seems surprised that we haven't signed a big ticket free agent. Jerry and Stephen both have said not to expect it for a while now and everyone knew that Ware was a possibly casualty. So why are people freaked out that so far we only have two middling DL added to this team?
We should see over the next few days exactly where we are going.
If we don't sign anyone of the Peppers, Allen, Melton or even Hatcher ilk, then chances are we are going forward with what we have and trying to get the cap squared away for next year. In the meantime, that will be three draft classes 2011-14 hopefully of guys ready to step up. We will then get that 4th class next year, which could be a high pick. So we effectively are in the middle of rebuilding and getting the cap to where we can use it effectively.
Secondly, people act as if this was the worst team in the league this past year. We weren't. Yes, we had one of the worst defenses in the league, yet we still held our own destiny the last week of the season. We did this despite not having Crawford, Bass, Ratliff and Spencer basically the entire season. Ware was hurt and despite playing most of the season was nowhere near his best. We ended up the season without Lee and Romo. The benefit is that a lot of guys got playing time.....that experience can only help us going forward. Guys like Holloman, Wilcox, Webb, Heath, Williams, Beasley, even Randle got more time than they may have otherwise. Our OL was set for the first time in several years and likely will get better considering Frederick and Leary got their first year of starting in. On offense we still have a potent group with Romo, Murray, Bryant, Williams, Witten and some other guys like Escobar, Hanna, Beasley, etc.
With Marinelli now calling the shots on defense, what we might see in scheme could be significantly different than what we got last year. The Ware of last year is easily replaced. I think we will see them commit to a position with Wilber.....they used him at times as a DE and others as a LB. It wouldn't surprise me if he stepped up this year. Crawford's skill set should fit what Marinelli likes. Bass was flashing in preseason at times and at the very least should be a rotation guy.
If we continue to make a few cheaper signings, like Ayers as has been mentioned (scouting report here -
http://www.milehighreport.com/2013/7/22/4546148/scouting-the-broncos-vets-robert-ayers ) and Woodyard and potentially add a couple of solid contributors in the draft, the defense could be improved. It will take Dallas getting a break with injuries, as we had Claiborne hurt a good part of the year and the swinging gate at Safety. No one we sign is going to take Ware's place, but improvement across the board is possible.
I have always been a glass half full kind of guy...I understand that. Not going to apologize for it either. I'll take grief for being a happy fan. I don't expect greatness in 2014, but I don't expect a complete collapse either. If that SHOULD happen, Dallas in 2015 likely will be starting with a new coaching staff, free agent money and a high draft pick. It's not the worst outlook out there.
