Do we owe Commanders fans an apology?

For years, we as Cowboys fans mocked the Commanders for overhauling their roster every year. They would go crazy in free agency, handing out signing bonuses to young and old alike, they would go deal crazy in the draft, and they would trade whenever they could.

Don't lie, you know as a Cowboys fan, you made fun of the Skins at least once for treating their roster like a fantasy football team. So my questions is do we owe them an apology because aren't the Cowboys depending on the exact same thing?

Jerry went crazy in free agency even giving out large signing bonuses to questionable older players such as Rivera, or corners like Henry who some folks didn't even think was one of the top three talents at the position. We forked out money for a Peerless Price revival, a Drew Bledsoe revival, and two draft picks for a linebacker on one of the league's worst defenses. You have to admit, Jerry Jones looked an awful lot like Dan Snyder this year. I think someone could easily point to our team as making some of the same questionable moves.

So do we owe them an apology? Nahhhhhhh...... :p: I don't know what is (probably a bad case of being a Cowboys homer), but these offseason moves just feel different than your typical Dan Snyder offseason. Bill Parcells seems to be looking for specific types of players, not just anyone who put up big numbers. I think Dan Snyder would have gone for the more flashy Smari Rolle, but Parcells was looking for a physical corner and chased Henry. He wanted the leadership from Rivera, not the youth from Wahle. And so on. Not to mention, the only contract that really threatens to hurt us is Rivera.

We'll see. We haven't played a single game yet. Don't call this off season overhaul a success yet. I like the young players, but am questionable about Rivera and Fergie. Neither have done squat for hte $20 mil we threw at them.

Henry seems to have really settled the 2ndary, but let's wait and see.

Price hasn't played a down for us yet.

Bledsoe doesn't look too smooth and hasn't really shown much difference between him and undrafted Tony Romo.

Never apologize to a 'Skins fan, never.

Our off season moves may or may not turn out well, but they were made on the basis of need and getting players with talent and with tread left on the tires. If any or all of these guys turn out to be busts, the that is the roll of the dice. These guys are not a collection of "names" at the end of their carees.

I won't totally agree. Rivera has some serious miles on him.

Oh yeah, I fuggets ... OL-men are in their prime past 40. Holy smokes.

For a $10 mil signing bonus, Rivera better play at a high lever for at least the length of his 5 year contract.

Roster overhaul and what the Commanders have been doing are 2 different things IMHO.

The Skins a few years back traded away essentially all of their draft class to steal away Randy Thomas, Lav Coles and Chad Morton from the Jets. They not only paid more than anyone else would for those guys they gave up 3 draft picks.

Dallas signed 4 or 5 relatively big name guys: Rivera, Bledsoe, Ferguson, Aaron Glenn, Henry, Peerless Price. Rivera, Henry and Ferguson were the only paid highly guys and age was probably only a factor with 3 of them. QB, DT, OL are probably the 3 positions with the highest median age in the NFL if you exclude kicker/punter. But the real overhaul come sint he 10 rookies to make the team. It might take the Skins 3 seasons to get 10 decent rookies.

I think Rivera has the ability to play out his contract. He is greatly helping our right side and he is a leader of the OL in a way that Larry Allen should have been. I fairness to LA, I think it is just not his nature to be a leader. He seem to be very intrverted.

Signing FA's in the offseason is one thing. trying to get every top FA wether you need them or not and change coaches yearly almost vs what we did there is a big difference. JJ has kept the purse closed fairly tightly over the past couple years. The skins on the other hand are projected at having a salary of 120 + mil next season. Granted that takes into account a lot of bonuses that will not be paid but still that's a lot of chedder you've put out there. So no we don't owe them anything.

The big name signings aren't what killed the 'Skins. What killed the 'Skins are doing things like letting Antonio Pierce, Stephen Davis and Fred Smoot go, trading Champ Bailey, and drafting terribly. Especially this year, it's amazing how a team could let the best two players from their defense go after it was their only asset last year.

Trust me guys, this 'Skins team is going to be bad. They might beat Chicago and go 0-15 the rest of the way.

Theres a difference between signing every player available and signing 4-5-6 key FA one year. Dont forget we dont do this every year. And besides, we see results, unlike little Danny Snyder, so HELL NO we dont owe them anything but a good butt kicking.

Well the irony (or perhaps not irony at all) is that in an offseason we had above average acquisitions (Bledsoe, Ferguson, Henry, Rivera, Price,
A Thomas, A Glenn and Fujita) we still had 2 first round draft choices and 8 (?) picks overall, the only one of which not making the team was due to injury. When did the Skins ever have that situation?

Well, when I first saw this topic, i was thinking, ***? Who would actually say that, then I read the post and laughed. But we do owe them an apology. We need to apologize for kicking their butts the last 15/16 games we've played them. I mean it's just wrong to do that to our biggest rival. :laugh2: Just kidding of course. :p:

My favorite was seeing Theisman's SuperBowl prediction: Steelers over Commanders.

Still chuckling over that one..

Uhhhh, no, they're not... the Skins relied heavily on backloading those mega-deals, the Boys haven't had to do any such thing... in fact, a few of those contracts were FRONT loaded...

There will be few dire cap consequences in future years as a result of the free agent deals the Cowboys made this offseason...

Why should I have not cut this team slack and have question some of the FA moves

I think one look at our draft and our salary cap will tell you that we are nothing like the Commanders.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I wasn't laughing at the Skins the *first* time they went all out to win it. It's the going all out year after year after year with nothing to show for it, and then trading draft picks in order to keep doing it that makes them funny.

That said, I think people underestimate Gibbs. He's going to have a strong team there at some point, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them competitive with the Cowboys this year. It wouldn't surprise me to see them 5-11 again, either.

How's that for out on a limb?

Washington routinely overpaid for guys who weren't good anymore. Once in a while they'd strike gold like with the DT they got from Chicago, but mostly Snyder was trying to make a big splash with a big name. Even worse, they'd routinely dump draft picks like with Coles and Morton and then inexplicably let them go. The biggest name Dallas got was Bledsoe, but the signing makes sense and he's not being overpaid. Henry, Fergy, Price-- there are existing relationships here, we aren't grabbing strangers we know nothing about to plug holes.
