Do we really need to spend a 1st round pick on a RB?

I'm not sure I want to make a first round selection this year.

Think its safe to assume the Packman deal gets done for two 2nd day picks.

At that point I see us as the NFC favorite with the following needs:

1) WR hands down is our most obvious need. Its the one spot in the starting lineup where we obviously can use an upgrade. Crayton's a 3, not a 2. But I don't want a 2. I want a 1a, someone who will command as much attention as Owens and can take over for him in a few years.
Roy Williams from Detroit for our 28th in round one.

2) DB, both CB and SS. We need to create competition for Roy. We also need more CB depth with Packman carrying a high risk of future suspension.

3) RB depth. A compliment to Barber.

I say we trade down from 22 out of the first round. We could end up with an extra 2 and 3.

Our draft could look something like this:
2 RB
2 SS
3 CB
3 QB
4 OL
5 NT
6 WR
7 OL

Don't forget that we ranked 17th in rushing last year... don't assume because marion barber went to the pro bowl that he is the answer. I love the guy and his rushing style but, he dissapeared in a lot of games.

I'm not suggesting we don't need a RB what i'm thinking is getting one in the 1st round seems like overkill when we already have a starter.

I think Miami, Kansas City, or the Jets at the beginning of round 2 will trade up to our 22nd pick and take Joe Flacco. Maybe we get a first next year maybe more picks this year, but I believe we pick early in round 2. Maybe use that pick for RB.

Everyone seems to assume we could get Williams for our #28. I think Detroit will demand at least the #22 if not more ( another pick or a player ). Almost everyone seems to agree Williams is pretty good but assumes we could get him cheap just because he likes Texas and his contract is up next year.

Detroit spent years drafting WRs really high in the 1st round. Why the heck would they trade the only one thus far that was good ( Calvin probably will be but has more to prove ) away. I could easily see them throwing enough money at him to make him forget his homesickness for Texas.

I'll be ecstatic if we get him at all. If we could get him for only the #28, we all need to send a big thank you card to Millen.

This is what might happen if we don't get an rb in the first round. Ok so lets just say Marion the Barbarian goes out with a big injury and won't be back all season. Then the running back you drafted in the second round comes in and he is probally not going to do much better then Thyson Thompso(and he sucks) and then your running game would go down hill and when your running game goes down hill the your offensive line starts to get weaker which means your passing game gets weaker and then you stat to suck. Although if the right rb was availible in the second round I would take him. But chances are it wouldn't end up that good.

How many backs did the Cowboys draft in the first round when they had Tony Dorsett, Tony Dorsett, Hershel Walker & Calvin Hill on the roster?

The answer is...

None.

You can't operate within context's of "what if". Not with a limited roster and limited cap space.

And to suggest that a Ray Rice or a Charles would "suck" just because they were drafted in the second round is beyond ludicrous.

If there is a 1st round pick spent on a back then I can tell you that Barber's days are numbered.

Having two high-profile backs in the same backfield does not work long-term. It didn't work before in Dallas with Dorsett and Walker and it won't work again. Money & playing time allotment (or lack there of) will force a decision.

The Cowboys were tied for 7th in YPA.

I think it can be safely assumed that the 17th in rushing was due more to a lack of attempts than just assuming that the running game sucked.

The top 5 teams in scoring in 2007:

1. NE
2. Dallas
3. Indy
4. GB
5. SD

And where did they rank when it came to Passing?

1. NE
4. Dallas
6. Indy
2. GB
26. SD

And where did they rank when it came to rushing?

13. NE
17. Dallas
18. Indy
21. GB
6. SD

It's all about scoring points. And you score points with the passing game.

Look at Indy--- how many Cowboy fans think that Joesph Addai sucks and Indy needs another RB? Hmm?

I bet damn few, but for some reason the Cowboys just have to spend a first round pick on a running back.

Well one thing that looking at that made me think about is Barber's balance. Every great back with his style had great balance, always looking like they were going down, but not quite. I hate to bring up names, but look at the great ones with similar styles, they all had it (Payton and Campbell come to mind, and presently AP and LT).

Great point. Points come out of the passing game these days, you run to keep the lead. As much as I like DMac, what is best for this whole team is to get Romo help by any means neccessary.

I really don't get this, we're pretty much looking for a spell back to MB3. It seems like such a huge waste to spend a first on someone who might only see a limited role on the team. HBs seem time be a dime a dozen these days anyway, why is everyone so high on getting a RB in the first when there's more then likely plenty of RBs in the lower rounds capable of carrying the ball 8-12 times a game that we don't have to commit starter money to get for the next 4 years?

I think a CB is our biggest need regardless of whether Pacman ends up on our team. I'd like to see us get someone ready to replace Henry when it's time for him to go. In the meantime, we'll have a nickel corner. If Pacman is a Cowboy, then it's even better. Either Henry of Newman will probably miss some games this year.

So give me a CB @ 22.

At 28, I really have my fingers crossed that we can pull off the Roy Williams ting with Detroit. If not, maybe Boldin is actually available. Barring that, I'm intrigued with James Hardy.

So give me a WR at 28.

Then I want to us to go for a RB. I say we throw some later picks along with our 2nd rounder in order to move up toward the top of the second and get us a guy to spell MB3.

If we can pull that off, we could use our remaining picks on bunny slippers and I'd be fine with it.

This is a position of strength in the draft and there is a good chance BPA will be a RB at one or even both of our first rounders. If it looks like getting Barber inked is going to be difficult, it makes good sense to get our future RB this year so we can groom him for a year.
