Good thread.
I've never coached football or any other sport. I have played various sports including football.
My first true football experience was watching a Cowboys game 40 years ago. So professional football became a passion before my love of high school and college football kicked in.
I'm still yelling and screaming at football games in my fifties like I did in my teens and twenties. I've gotten more respectful of others attending games, sit more often, and allow people behind me suffering from paralysis below the waist to see the game more often without me blocking their view.
My appreciation of players as people has increased as I've grown older. I cared about players as mostly contributors way back when. My appreciation was great as long as they were members of my favorite teams but I really started caring about players more as people than just entertainers starting in my late twenties forward. For me, empathy provides more awareness of what players bring or do not bring to the table in many aspects and deepens my appreciation for the sport they play.
Overall? I think I have just as much fun for Cowboys football as I do for my high school and favorite colleges ULM (alma mater) and LSU (I confess being a half-fan of my favorite college football teams
). I cheer my head off just as hard watching my high school football team play as I do watching Dallas play. My heart feels with pride regardless of which team wins and aches regardless of which team losses. To be honest though, I've shed many more tears for Cowboys wins or losses than I have ever done for any of my other favorite football teams.
