Do you take Jernigan, Barr, Ealy, Martin, Lewan, or Gilbert?

At the 16th spot and no solid trade options, if we have Jernigan, Barr, Ealy, Martin, Lewan, or Gilbert. Who do you guys perfer? At this point, I can see at 4 of these players available at the Cowboys pick?

I would be interested to see your list of the 1st 15 picks if all of these players are going to be available at #16.

I would go with Barr with Lewan as the 2nd choice.

Well, good question xwalker. I having been hearing Lewan slipping due to character issues and Barr because he is viewed as a tweener. I started to look at some recent mocks, they really have not dropped. I will have to see, however I may have over reached on this one.

Yeah. I've seen so many mocks now my head is spinning. One thing for sure is that in all of them at least one of those guys is there....it's just not the same 1-3 guys available from mock to mock, but always some of them (never all of them though).
In any case, it makes your question legit.

I probably would agree w/ xw and go with Barr and then Lewan.

I agree got to go with Barr and then hope we luck into target rich environment at 47 if there are no trade options.

They have to bring Lewan in and do a full psychological examination and find out if he is mildly crazy or destructively crazy.

1) Barr. BPA and a position of need. May just be a rotational guy the 1st year as he needs to get bigger and stronger.
2) Lewan. Next BPA and Free's replacement. Welcome to the guard position Free.
3) Gilbert. CB not needed as much as DL, but can't pass up superior player to fill position of need. Would cause a log jam at the position and have a lot of money sitting on the bench Claiborne or Carr.
4) Ealy. Not thrilled with the player, but still a position of need that can get filled.
5) Jernigan. We don't value 1-Tech to spend a 1st rd pick on him. Would probably be a trade down. But if push came to shove, it would be Jernigan.
6) Martin. Rumor has it that Dallas doesn't project him as a NFL tackle. So, being solely a OG he rated as the 3rd best OG, which makes him not worthy of being a 1st rd pick.

I go Barr (easily), then Lewan...big drop off, Martin, Jernigan...another drop off, ealy, gilbert

note: I think Gilbert is a terrific prospect, I would just HATE it if the cowboys drafted a DB with their first pick

Barr isn't being drafted off of film production. He is being drafted as a projection. You have to consider how far he has come as a pass rusher in the short time frame he was given to to develop. Most prospects will have at least one year remaining to refine their position. Barr moved from RB to DE and only played defense for 2 years.

Sturm admits that he has no idea how to do projections. I cannot say that I do either. I do not know enough about teaching defensive line to see the progression. I think in Barr you defer to Marinelli and others who do know this type of thing.

In those two years he has developed a spin move as well as developing a swim move and his bull rush. I also know that while he does get washed out on stretch plays, fail to use his length advantage and allows OT to get their hands on him, or lose outside contain and get trapped inside more than you would like, he does make plays all over the field. 13.5 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss as a junior, he added 20 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and three forced fumbles in 2013.

If we didn't have Tyron Smith I would agree that Lewan is BPA but we do have Tyron and a gaping hole at DE. We are bringing Barr in for a visit. If the coaches sign off on being able to continue his improvement in our system then we could use those plays on our defense.

gotta go with Barr. He has the potential to be a pass rusher that might rival Ware. There is no one else that you can say the same that we have any hope of getting.

Valid approach, but I guess I'm more conservative. I look at Lewan and think there's a good chance I can lock down the right side of my line for 10 years, while I'm much less certain that Barr will develop into the type of pass rusher the Cowboys need. I don't want to take that chance at 16.

I'm on board with what appears to be the general consensus. I can't pass up Barr in this scenario, the potential is off the charts. Even if he plays OLB in a Von Miller type roll while he bulks up, this guy brings to the table the key element that was missing from our defense last year…pressure. After him I like Lewan as well because seeing the offense behind a competent line last year wars exciting. 3rd place is toss up between Jernigan and Gilbert for me. I really think Gilbert is going to be special.

Barr or Gilbert are the only one worth a 16th spoy. Rest are late 1st early 2nd round players IMO.
