Coleman isnt a ball hawk type FS and was average AT BEST at that position last yr...
Which puts him ahead of Davis.
And what are the alternatives? Chavous has the same problems as Coleman (age and more of a SS). Pittsburgh seems to have zero problems letting Hope walk away, and while he's certainly younger than Coleman there is little evidence he is any better a player. We can go high in the draft on a FS, but signing Coleman to a short term deal doesn't prohibit that in any way (ironically, Hope would, as he would want a bigger/longer contract than Coleman is likely to).
McGinest will be 35 during the season and has had no more than 6 sacks in eight of his eleven seasons...
He's had no fewer than 6 sacks in all but 2 of his 11 seasons. He is and has always been a consistently productive player.
Quick, other than Ware, name the last Dallas LBer to record 6 sacks? (yes, I know, unfair question considering we were a midget 4-3 defense for so long, but still....)
For a 1-2 year deal as a transition player until Burnett and any new draftees this year get up to speed, I fail to see how this doesn't help the team (depending on the contract, of course).
Fabini and Mawae are both old (especially Mawae) and both are coming off major injury
Fabini's injury is I believe a torn bicep, it hardly warrants much concern on a long term bases. And again he's an instant upgrade to what we have now, and lessens the pressure that we have to draft a T and start him as a rookie.
Mawea I agree with you, he's more of a concern at a lesser area of need.
we need real upgrades at RT, OLB opp Ware, FS and probably C...we dont need to tread water anymore with stop gap guys who you cross your fingers and hope they somehow make it through a yr
Suggestions?
We're not going to break the bank for Hutchinson, and Bentley is going to be extremely overpaid. What else is there on the OL?
At LBer Peterson is probably too small for Bill. Arrington is talented, but obviously brings his own baggage that makes the huge contract demands he and the Postons are likely expecting risky.
I don't see anyone else that is a clear cut better player than McGinnest.
if they sign those players to fill the holes here and do nothing else, it'll be a massive failure for an offseason IMO, and would be setting us up for another mediocre to so-so season next yr
So are they going to cancel the draft?
Personally I think this is a pretty lousy FA class all around, unless you happen to like the TO idea. The only decent, young, relatively available O-lineman is Bentley, and he's going to command a fortune - probably more than Wahle got last year, which most of the league thought was a huge signing for a
tackle, much less a guard.
Other than TO and Bentley, or Hutchinson if the Alexander signing proves crippling to the Seahawks, I don't see a whole lot of real talent out ther in FA worth breaking the bank for. If that's the case, I'm fine with older, stopgap guys who will be cheaper and want shorter deals
as long as we draft solid youth to develop behind them.
