We have continuously invested valuable draft picks in backup TE's while neglecting the WR position.

They had Miles Austin playing at a pro-bowl level and followed that up by drafting Dez Bryant in the first round. That is not neglecting the WR position.

If it weren't for those two drops last week we wouldn't be talking about this but therein could be the problem.....

If your 2nd can't be counted on to have 100 yard games when he becomes the 1st due to injury then he isn't good enough.

How many teams have a #1 receiver that can go out and have 100 yard game every Sunday?

Only 4 players averaged over 100 yards per game last season.
Only 5 players averaged over 90 yards per game last season.
Only 13 players averaged over 80 yards per game last season.
Only 18 players averaged over 70 yards per game last season.
Only 29 players averaged over 60 yards per game last season.

It is nice to set a lofty standard, but the reality is that there are few players that can actually achieve those goals. There aren't 32 true #1 wide recievers in the NFL. There is always going to be a drop off with the #2 guy. That doesn't mean you don't try to improve the personnel when you can, but it isn't an easy task.

Tim Cowlishaw: Agree. Agree. Agree. Weeden was OK. The man has completed 88 percent of his passes since coming off the bench. Everyone's making fun of the short throws. Ever seen Tom Brady play? QBs today make short throws most of the time. Now he does have to show he can get it down the field but I don't think that's really the issue. The issue is the receivers. The Cowboys had no depth at WR and are paying for it with the Dez injury.

Jerry Jones says Cowboys have big receiving threats, beyond Dez

Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones says the roster he built has a lot more good receiving threats than just Dez Bryant.

In an interview on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said receiver Terrance Williams, who may be the No. 1 target with Bryant out, compares to Hall of Fame Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin in the way he competes. And Jones wants to see Williams get plenty of targets in the coming weeks.

“I know how driven he is,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I know Michael Irvin, and [Williams] is Michael Irvin-driven. He’s Michael Irvin-work ethic. He can really compete. I expect him to compete. I know what was bothering him, that he didn’t feel like he got a chance or didn’t compete. I think we should expect to see him get some balls. He knows how to compete.”

Yes. I don't think Weeden is good enough for even the number 3 job though.

Yeah Terrence is about an avg #2. I think what most of the zonrs want is another #1 receiver playing the two.

Has he always scored some long TDs behind the D? Yes
Has he always been the guy Romo finds after scrambling on broken plays? Yes

Has he always dropped too many passes, especially ones that stop drives? Yes
Has he always disappeared for games at a time, even with Dez? Yes

Is he one of the better #2 receivers in the NFL? No, not even close
Is he capable of stepping up his game when Witten or Dez is injured to pick up the slack? No, never has
Is he a good possession receiver who runs good routes, reads D's, finds spots, and shows good hands to move the chains? No
Is he a consistent receiver, the very definition of what you want in your #2? No
Can he ever...ever...be considered a #1, even a poor man's #1, for at least a short time? No

Have we seen him make good catches that were difficult? Yes, at least 2-3 where he either made a fingertip catch or tiptoed the sideline, but that's not many in his career
Have we ever seen him make a contested catch, fighting for the ball? Not that I've ever seen

Williams is a so so WR who fits a specific niche, that of being a guy who benefits from playing with Dez, Witten, and Romo...I'd even say Beasley has greater value at this time, and I don't see the Cowboys paying him the market rate for a starting receiver when his contract comes up. With Dez, without Dez, what this team needs most at WR right now is a Keyshawn Johnson type....doesn't have to have great speed, but we need a #2 with great hands who will use his body and fight for catches in traffic and move the chains---a possession guy alongside Dez is more important than just a speed guy....IMO.

That would be even stronger depth...and in an already good offensive group.

I don't understand the concept of 2nd WR. If you are on the field playing WR (not slot) then you should be held to a certain standard. I understand the salary cap keeps teams from having 2 Dez level receivers. However the 2nd WR should absolutely have the ability to have 1 WR production. If your 2nd can't be counted on to have 100 yard games when he becomes the 1st due to injury then he isn't good enough.

We have continuously invested valuable draft picks in backup TE's while neglecting the WR position.

I also believe Terrance Williams demonstrated in 2014 he is fine as a #2. I thought he was pretty productive last season and had massive catches in both playoff games. There are a few things we are dealing with with Williiams. 1) The #2 WR is kind of the #3 most places because of the number of balls Jason Witten gets. 2) He never has had great technique in catching the ball as he defaults to the rap of being a "body catcher" as opposed to a hands catcher. That will occasionally lead to some disappointing moments where the body demonstrates why that is never taught. And 3) I assume he is putting a ton of pressure on himself with Dez out. And to some people that can have an adverse effect on the results. But, I still believe the Cowboys can depend on Williams. He is pretty solid overall...

Unfortunately, when Dez is out TWill has to pick up his game, and he didn't last week. Need to catch the ball when it comes your way. Same way Witten has to stop making dumb off sides penalties and Smith has to line up properly.

People loved Alvin Harper as the #2 behind some guy wearing a #88 jersey.

TWill has put up bigger numbers than Harper did.
