I know this is not a mechanic/truck/repair forum, but there is bound to be someone who may be able to help me.

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck.

My check engine light comes on.

The code that I get is either a P0445 or P0442.

From what I've read, that could mean any of several things.

Gas cap, which I replaced but problem continues.

Does anyone have the same problem, how did you repair it?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

P0445 means your tire pressure is too low and p0442 means you have a new door ding on the passenger side.

Solution: go buy a Honda Ridgeline.

Sorry DaFan... I'm bored.

You might just have a bad sensor reporting these errors.

Is there an easy way to check this?

Take it to the dealer and let them hook it up to their computer that checks that stuff.

I am in NO WAY a mechanical person when it comes to autos. I just know I had a bad sensor on a car one time and it kept making the check engine light come on.

It started after I had hit a deer and had the car worked on. I guess they did not replace the sensor or reset it.

Without fail after a few minutes of driving the check engine light would come on.

Got annoyed with it and took it in, they replaced the sensor and it did not come back on.

Chances are you are probably best off going and having it checked on their machine anyways just to be sure it is not something serious.

That is the bad thing about some of the cars these days...I think they started making them so you have no choice but to go to a mechanic for the electronics and computers in them.

yep, that is why I replaced the gas cap, that was the only easy thing I could do myself.

I am hoping someone has similar truck with same problem and can tell me how it was fixed.

I know I'm gonna have to take it into the dealer, but I really don't trust them, so I want to have an idea what the problem may be. Cause they may tell me it needs this, this and this and they may be out just to get some more money from me.

Thanks Fellas!!

While back I was getting a fuel cap warning on my Explorer and it eventually caused my check engine sensor to come own but since it's still under the factory warranty it was a freebie.

If the code you got showed a certain problem and you fixed that problem you will need to reset the computer in the truck. You can go to the dealer and pay them a grip of money to do it. Or if you don't mind redoing your clock and radio stations you can disconnect your battery for 5 minutes and reconnect it. That should reset your check engine light. And if you fixed the problem it should not come back on

The first response is to the exact same question you asked.

I thought this was good too. More in depth.

After identifying all the emissions related parts from the manifold connection back thru the gas tank/cap, I used both a Mityvac hand vacuum pump and vacuum gauge to check for leaks within all hoses and parts at the engine side. Eliminating those pointed my attention rearward where I traced the evap hoses to the evap cannisters. I decided to remove and inspect both evap cannisters(located on outside frame rail near right rear wheel). When I pulled the evap cannisters down I could see the evap hoses still connected at the top of the cannisters. Here's where my problem was - the elbow shaped 14mm OD hose running from the 'downstream' side cannister was cracked and splitting. I could clearly see thru the wall. Second, the U-shaped hose connecting both cannister also displayed marginal weather cracking. I replaced both hoses and re-attached the cannisters back onto the truck. Using my Actron Pocketscan I cleared my codes and have yet to have any DTC or emissions-related lights return.
Your situation may be different but a similar approach may work. Good Luck!

Yep, I did that too. It actually cleared the check engine message for a day or 2 after I replaced the gas cap and disconnected the battery. I thought to myself, You just saved yourself a ton of money.... LOL Man, was I wrong....

Thanks for the advice!!

Take it to AUTOZONE. They'll run a free diagnostic check whenever your check engine light comes on.
