A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal
A bad gas cap is most probably the cause.

Is there an easy way to check this?

Disconnect the positive battery terminal for about 1/2 hour. Reconnect, and if the light is still on or comes back on within a day or 2 of driving, then look into repairs.
