Does anyone remember this?

I'm sorry. This thread does concern Roy. I have always been a big RW fan, but I also see that his play has regressed drastically in recent years. Now to the question. Does anyone remember when Roy was coming out of college, he made a statement at some point that indicated that he doubted he would play more than about 5 years. I remember it because I was so high on RW that I was terrified that he would seriously retire after five years, when we would be counting on him to be our defensive leader. He seemed to feel that he would not be interested in playing pro football longer than that. Now I begin to wonder if we are seeing signs that he's basically reached the end of his attention span and has started to lose interest in playing, other than it is his source of income so he stays with it. He doesn't look like he enjoys the game as much anymore. This would explain alot. Again, I think Roy was the greatest safety ever for the first three years or so, but since then I just don't see the same player. Despite popular opinion, I even think he was terrific in coverage the first couple of years. I never worried if Roy was covering a top-level tight end, because I knew roy would shut him down.
What do you guys think?

I know. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I've just been wondering about this a lot lately, and I don't have time to post much, so I let it go so long that everyone else go their Roy threads started before mine. I am ashamed.:abuseme:

He said it, and I've speculated recently that he already retired and forgot to tell anyone.

Seriously, I don't think football is that important to him.

I mentioned this in a thread a few weeks ago. I remember when he was drafted he said he would play 8 years and yes, it concerned me then because that isn't something a guy with a true passuon for the game would say. That sounds like a guy who wants to get his $$, get in and get out healthy.

I definitely think he's playing soft these days to protect his body. He even mentioned on the Jim Rome radio show a few weeks ago that he had to pick his spots to make big hits because of the wear and tear on his body.

He's stuck here, though. The only way out is thru injury. The Cowboys would take back a chunk of his signing bonus if he just quit.

I remember this and said it to friends even last year because there had started to seem to be a dropoff in his play even then. If you recall, there was all this speculation that he had a shoulder injury on this board.

I'm an admitted Roy homer and defend him against buddies on a weekly basis (to a point), but clearly he does not show the same passion, recklessness or especially aggression he did his first three years.

I hate it too because I also felt he had the ability to be one of the all-time greats.

:D Honestly, even though some people think it is stupid, I have to agree with the guy who thinks it might be because he doesn't fit well into the 3-4 system. Out of curiosity did Roy's decline start when we switched from 4-3?

So with Roy having stated that and his level of play declining in 2005 how could we be so gullible and sign him to a bigger extended contract. Either we were very dumb or Roy assured them that he indeed was commited to the game and team and that he would start playing lights out again.

Not wanting to fill another hole on D with FS still shaky...

Still got voted to Pro Bowl (merits not really debatable for this discussion)...

His AGENT seeking another payday so pushing and assuring Roy's desire to play...

Jerry's personal affinity for Roy....

He wasn't ready to retire YET and figured collect another big payday to set me up for the rest of my career, besides I can still play without killing myself...

I'm still holding out hope as we enter the playoffs and get closer to the promised land the juices will start to flow and we'll get what we had. Although I have fallen into the camp of seeking a replacement, if nothing else to "push" some competiveness out him.

And I hate saying that.
