Does Dallas miss Hamlin more than we think?

I think we should pick up a CB next year in FA and move Newman to FS....and Sensi to SS.

He was just a good player..pretty average.

I thought we were talking about safety's that really played well and made a difference.

Like Woody, james washington, brock marion did. Roy williams in his first 2 years....

We just havent had that for a while.

Well, in a sense ya. I know the Washingtons and definately the Brocks don't fall outta trees everyday. Would love to have both of those guys back there, but, Teague was a good one as well. And Roy Williams? Hell yeah, that guy was the snot back then. It is a shame that he isn't here and that he wasn't the player he once was. He gave this defense a little dirt, moxy. A chip on it's shoulder. Not now. I don't see anyone on D doing that.

I know most of us have been tough on Hamlin the past year, but is it a coincidence we started giving up these big plays over 20 yards or more when Hamlin is out? Alan Ball has done a decent job but Hamlin isn't there to be our "QB of the secondary." I know Hamlin doesn't make a ton of plays but I think in terms of making sure everyone is in the correct place, has gone undervalued IMO. Maybe Newman doesn't give up that 3rd and long if Hamlin tells him to press at the line so Jackson doesn't get a clean start off the LOS. Do you think we've missed Hamlin?

I think you're right. He hasn't been great, but he is not as bad as everyone thinks. Not every team can have a Reed or Polomalu. But yet people think we should. It would be nice, but we don't have yet. And since JJ doesn't pay top $$$ at that position, we will only get one by luck!

I think both safety positions need new players next yr.

100% agreed. While some teams have gone with putting 2 FS types (quicker, athletic, coverage skills) back there we have stuck with 2 SS types. We have had deep coverage issues for some time now.

The fact that our ILB's can't cover anyone makes it worse. I really like Brooking and I can tolerate Bradie James but the combination of those 2 really hurts our defense. We need a more athletic ILB (Jason Williams?) out there to make our 3-4 work. If Karlos Dansby (Arizona) or DeMeco Ryans (Houston) hit the open market (both are potential free agents) then we should seriously consider them. I'd also send Ken Hamlin and Sensabaugh packing and try to add at least 1 safety in Free Agency (OJ Atogwe, Nick Collins, Dawan Landry) and 1 safety in the Draft.

If you replace Bradie James, Gerald Sensabaugh, and Ken Hamlin with 3 athletic, faster players it will go a long way into turning our defense into one of the league's best.

Oi...I hate moving corners to safeties to begin with but...

From a football standpoint, you don't take a corner that has poor ball skills and ask him to play FS. Rod Woodson was great at it because he could get to the football. Newman would probably be able to blanket TEs, but he still wouldn't be much of a playmaker.

.

I used to be really high on Atogwe in the draft. I know he had a really good year recently, don't know about this year, haven't really followed him or anything, but I would still love him on this team over the bums we've got now

We have to upgrade the SS position. Sensabaugh is getting worse every week. I'm starting to think Keith Davis was a better safety last year.

The defense will certainly perform better with a healthy Hamlin.

:laugh2:

I would re-sign Sensabaugh to a reasonable contract. Most of his problems have come when he plays FS in dime situations. He is at his best closer to the LOS, he is very good in coverage if he is allowed to press the receiver. Sensabaugh is just not good in space, but neither is Ken Hamlin.

Sensabaugh's tacking, playmaking & coverage were very good earlier in the season pre-injury and when he was playing exclusively at SS.

Look at the matchup Sensy had this week. Anyone covering Gates is considered a mismatch. Sensabaugh has been a bright spot on this defense; I would like to see him re-sign to a 3 year deal. He's a solid player.

I doubt that anyone expected Sensabaugh to shut down Gates. However, it would have been nice if he had been within 5 yards of the TE when he caught the TD. Sensabuagh started the year off strongly but has really looked like a different (worse) player over the past month. He's a replaceable part of the defense and should probably be gone next year.

Greg Ellis................missed much more, IMO.

I do think Hamlin has good game skills that may be missing.

Newman is a lazy, undisciplined SOB who thinks he's a great CB,,, moving him to another position would simply move the problem to another position.

He's also getting older.

Bottom line is that none of the starters other than Jenkins should feel comfortable with their status for next year.
