or is the media coverage just more intense. Today I read story about over 1,500 children being raped, abducted & involved in slave trade in England by mostly Pakistani men from a single town. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that report from North Waziristan but from England it shocks me. The city council and police were aware of the problem but failed to do anything due to fears of looking racist by pointing out the ethnicity of perpetrators. Is world upside down right now?

The UK has pretty much been ruined by something that a lot of people know what it is but are afraid to talk about for fear of being deemed a racist or worst. It would also appear the USA is headed down the same path......Sadly.

Yes they have and it's spreading at an alarming rate.

Both. Add in the growing concentration of people to urban areas for job/lifestyle reasons, and the problems seam to be getting worse.

The coverage. There is still traditional media coverage and to go along with that there are tons of internet coverage and discussion as well.

There's nothing new about stuff like this. The difference is that now people are aware of it and have less tolerance for it. It's not so long ago (and it's still true in some places) that women, children, minorities had no protections and could be (and were) abused and exploited with abandon.

One example: violent crime has been trending down for decades, but people don't feel like that's true.

I agree with the many saying it is just exposed more but always has been around. If this happened in the 70s you never would have heard about the 1500 kids. The society in the past would not have even suspected that things like that actually happened and the people doing those things were much better able to be covert and keep secrets that no one outside of them could ever have been aware of.

The internet/technology, etc as well as just being a much more knowledgeable society and less naive are what changed, I think the frequency of this type of stuff happening has changed very little.

If you think a certain race or religion ruins everything, then yes, that's racist.

Only an idiot would lump in an entire race/religion together, because of the acts of....1% of the population (if even that) ?

Horrible people come in all colors, shapes and sizes. I agree race shouldn't make the police hesitate, though.

Agreed. Speak the truth.

The media and modern US "culture" have done a great job of trying to instill fear. As other posters have mentioned, violent crime has been declining since the 70's. Policy is easier to manipulate when citizens are willing to give up their rights as a result of unsubstantiated fear.

Media is more slanted to the left.
JMO.

Some aspects most definitely (social issues = meaningless in long term), but the important $ aspects; not even a little bit. Hyping crime (fear) increases budgets...defunding others (social services like mental health/retirement (SS) for example);) NIH funding is at the lowest levels since allocations. Why are our kids crap @ math/science? Lazy generation yada yada:D

Yes. And they fear monger to the left base.

The ones who are supposedly lenient on crime? They aspire to those outside of inner cities/inner burbs to sway their perspective on how bad crime rates really are. Drug crime happens (yes big time) but there is a reason for that is not in discussion on this board (poverty/education = practical opportunities). Tougher prison sentences, etc. That is not swayed to them.
