Does Nicks fit?

I know there are several people all fired up about trying to get Carl Nicks to shore up the offensive line. I admit I haven't watched the guy play much, but I'm a little concerned about his size.

The movement on the offensive line has been very much so in the direction of smaller more athletic linemen. Nicks is listed at over 340. That seems much more like the profile they looked for in the past with Flozell, Leonard Davis, etc.

Is he really that freakishly athletic that he would fit in a mobility based scheme at his size?

until his injury, LA was the same size and had great mobility. The very best athletes can

So you're saying that Nicks has that kind of freakish combination of athleticism and size. Hmm. Interesting.

No a broken down Kosier fits much better.

Great players adjust and will find a way to fit the team.

boom.

Nicks would be a great fit and would help tony stay on his feet for more then 1 second

His only drawback is his price tag . I have no other issues, Hope we can make it work

Yes he does. We despiratly need a strong side. He fits this mold to a tee. He will cost some cash but not that much more than davis did. weve got the money so fix it. Prossman

I haven't seen him play much so I don't know how he does in the screen game.

Having said that I agree strongly that any new OGs should fit our offenses style. We have played too many years with a mish-mash of guys that didn't fit together. One guy was good at zone blocking, the next was a man blocker. One guy was an immovable mountain and the next was great in space.

We should ideally be looking for a guy who is both a good in-line drive blocker for short yardage and still able to play in space. I think DeCastro is such a player and I'm hoping we pick him if Brockers and Coples are off the board. None of the OLBs are worth it at that spot and the only CB worth the pick (Claiborne) will also be gone. We have no need for NT or a high pick at QB or WR.

Nicks fit in Callahan's schemes once upon a time. Fit is not the concern, its the $$.

If he is signed, Nicks would be the best OL on the team, easily. It would be plain foolish not to play up to his strengths.

If he doesn't fit ...

I don't think the Cowboys will spend the money on Nicks.

I dont think so too, maybe on another guard but not on Nicks.

We just need to get Montre Holland to get offseaon work with Woicick and we'll be fone at G - am I right Jerry?

The Jets provided the blue-print for building a dominant offensive line. (See them signing All-Pro guard Alan Faneca in step number 3)

1. D'Brickashaw Ferguson (# 4 pick 2006 draft)
2. Nick Mangold (# 29 pick 2006 draft)
3. Alan Faneca (FA-All-Pro guard)
4. Damien Woody (FA- OT)

Here is another argument for going after the All-Pro guard.

In 2005, the Cowboys spent $ 30 million dollars in guaranteed money on three players:

Anthony Henry
Marco Rivera
Jason Ferguson

How did spreading the resources work out then?

I think all three players were busts.

Carl Nicks has at least 5 years of his prime ahead of him, and he will play at 27 years old next year. The Cowboys have three big needs in the interior of the offensive line, and Nicks should be one of the safest investments on the market and the best player available at a need position for the Cowboys. Dallas should be able to sign Nicks (if available) and still do some other things. New Orleans may find a way to keep him. Time will tell, but I sure hope he hits the market. Furthermore, I hope Bill Callahan points to the Jets blue-print of building a dominant offensive line. The Jets had three blue-chip talents in their offensive line, and Dallas has one right now, Tyron Smith. Woody was a force at RT, too.

Signing Nicks would give Dallas 3/4 of the moves that reflect the Jets blue-print.

Drafting David DeCastro would be 4/4 of the moves.

"Busts" is way too harsh for those guys. Granted Rivera was a disappointment because of his back, but Henry was a solid number 2 corner for several years, and Ferguson was exactly what he was paid to be: a solid interior line player who helped make the transition to a 3-4.

The movement on the offensive line has been very much so in the direction of smaller more athletic linemen.

Two observations about this:

1) In mid-season, when the Boys had to re-tool their offensive line, they brought in two players who REALLY don't fit the mold you describe-- Derrick Dockery and Montrae Holland... smaller and more athletic, they're not...

Remember too that all three of the offensive linemen they drafted last year all project to eventually play in the 315-320 pound range...

2) Bill Callahan is likely to have his own opinion as to what a good offensive lineman looks like, and at this point I don't have a read on what kind of player he prefers...

I have a third observation, too-- it is on occasion possible to find an offensive lineman who is huge, and still quite athletic... what's wrong with going that way??

Nicks is listed at over 340. That seems much more like the profile they looked for in the past with Flozell, Leonard Davis, etc.

Is he really that freakishly athletic that he would fit in a mobility based scheme at his size?

Well, the Saints aren't exactly known as a smash-mouth offense, are they?? Seems to me that they rely on quickness and agility more than brute force...

And Nicks played pretty well in that scheme...

What, you didn't know that he's widely considered to be one of the best guards in the league??

I'm quite curious as to why you think that... my thinking is the exact opposite, that the Boys have the cap room to make one or two pricey acquisitions, and after the last two seasons, Jerry's gonna be anxious to do whatever it takes to make the next step forward...

Most analysts agree that the quickest way for the Boys to do that is to build up their offensive line... therefore, if the Boys were to make a big move at any one position, it would be on the OL (IMO), and Nicks is the big name at that position in this free agent class...
