Does our offense need an identity?

I say we name our offense, "Billy."

That was inspirational. I think I've stumbled upon our offense's identity counterpart.

In the short term -- I don't think this team does any particular thing well enough to merit specializing on it.

I'd like to see them become a strong running team, but, honestly, I don't think their OL is good enough to pull it off. For all of their bluster and bulk, this OL tends to tire themselves out at least as much as they tire defenses. They usually fade late in games.

In the longer term, I suspect that Garrett's Chaos Theory offense makes it more difficult to build a coherent unit. How do you find the players who best fit your scheme if you are doing your best at avoiding being predictable? What kind of players fit a Chameleon offense?

---

I'll tell you exactly what Garrett's offense reminds me of.

Think back to those interviews that Tom Landry gave shortly after he was let go. When asked what went wrong with the team during his final years, Landry said his most basic mistake was attempting to "mix philosophies" (his and Paul Hackett's).

It appears to me that Garrett is recreating the same mistake.

Good post, Zero. That's what I'm thinking, too.

What does that mean? Offensive identity?

You are talking about WCO? Run and Shoot? Or are we talking about like the Patriots and Eagles that where pass heavy or Vikings last year that were run heavy?

Maybe just even pass run?

Personally I think you are what you are. You don't decide what you're going to be. You take your strengths and go forward.

Garrett just needs to stop trying to outsmart everyone, because he is only outsmarting himself.

Spend more time on preparing the WRs so they aren't so confused on every play and less time on making it THAT much more difficult to learn.

Garret needs to lend his scheme to quick release and running the football. If we can establish some success with quick release then we can build from there in the passing game. When it comes to the run I feel like we don't have to change much. We played a solid defense in a denver and got beat in that department. The thing that needs to improve is the passing game.

We don't need an identity, we need a QB that can play.

We've ran the ball. You can't run the ball every down. We were stuck with a banged up RB and one healthy RB in our last game and the opposing defense was sticking 8 or 9 guys in the box. That tells me our identity is a running offense, but if your QB can't beat the defense when they stack the box like that, it's time to find a new QB.

The whole team needs an identity. Successful teams have that. We all know what "Steeler football" is. We all know what the Patriots do. I can't say what it is the Cowboys do because it is practically psychotic how we switch personas from week to week. I thought we were going to be a running team that relied on strong defense. Sunday's performance went completely away from that.

They need unity. The right hand needs to know what the left is doing. Phillips' comments after the game were so irritating because it spelled out exactly what the problem is. He doesn't have a clue what Garrett is doing. And judging by Garrett's playcalls sometimes, he doesn't have a feel for the defense's achievements either. It is almost like neither is watching what the other is doing and realizes what kind of day the other is having.

The offense needs to feed off the defense and vice versa. This throwing up our hands when one side doesn't hold up its end needs to stop.

As long as we have this co-head coach dynamic at work, that's going to be difficult to achieve.

I think that's more accurate.

And I couldn't agree more. Garrett is even coaching like he's competing for the job next year, getting way too cute when he doesn't need to.

So you need multiple running backs to be a "running team"?

You have to be committed first. Garrett is all over the place.

The only constant is that we always seem to fall back to the pass eventually. We were killing the Giants with three healthy backs. Look what happened there.

My issue is that neither one of them, but especially Garrett, has the same sense of desperation that some of the players say we need.

Garrett is coaching like he has not a care in the world. He seems overly arrogant, stubborn and fearless.

If Jones gives him that kind of security that he doesn't fear for his job then he's at fault. As for Phillips, he's just glad to be here and if it only lasts through this year, he'd probably be happy he just hung around for three years.

Garrett's 3rd and long chucks from deep in their own territory doesn't take into account what the defense is trying to do. Garrett isn't tied directly to the defense, he most probably doesn't care about how Wade wants to play the next series.

The Ravens were a running team last year, now they are pass happy and having success.

I think the Boys just need to concentrate on playing nasty, tough, physical football and the rest will fall into place. Games are won in the trenches.

Because Cameron took the tutelage of Flacco seriously. He also has a nice play-action passing attack, while Garrett runs out of shot-gun all day long and can't keep the defense honest.
