Does Romo need a lot of time to get in sync with receivers?

I keep looking at his most productive receivers and they're always players Romo has been with for at least a couple years.

Roy Williams came on really slowly, but we all saw in his 3rd year here (2nd full year), 9-11 was really starting to come along.

I hope this timeline can really progress quicker with Dez Bryant, who seemed to connect more as the season went on with Kitna. I can see why Bennett might possibly be more interested in seeing Kitna be the starting quarterback. For all intensive purposes thats his quarterback. He is a 2nd team guy. Most of his reps are with Kitna.

That said who struggled without the aid of romo? Surprisingly BOTH Miles Austin AND Roy Williams.

Didn't seem to have a problem clicking with TO on the field when TO first arrived.

Terry Glenn had a nice year in 2006 with Romo stepping in for Bledsoe.

I wouldn't consider Austin to be an example of a well-developed relationship. They may have practiced together but Austin really didn't get playing time until he was forced into action against KC and it was pretty much seamless from there.

I'd consider Roy the lone exception which leads me to believe it's not the QB as much as it is the WR.

As far as Dez is concerned, I'm not worried at all. I think Romo is going to have a certain type of confidence in Dez that he may not have in any other player on the team, including Witten. I really think that Tony is going to give Dez opportunities to go after the ball that he doesn't give out too often to the other guys. We've seen Austin get a couple but I'm thinking Dez is going to get many.

I've thought about this a few times over the past couple years. If you look at Witten, Miles and Roy you'd have to say yes but a play like John Phillips had no problem getting on the same page with Tony. I'm sure Dez will catch on fast too. He's has that unique talent for tracking down the ball no matter where it is.

If you compare Owen's 2nd year to his 1st (although that has some bledsoe), you see a huge difference. It's actually one of Owen's best career seasons.

We had Terry Glenn and Miles Austin since 2003 and 2004 (or 5) respectively. Romo definitely had time with Miles Austin.

John Phillips is a bit overrated by us fans. He catches a lot of Romo's passes as the 3rd tight end... often going up against a teams worst coverage linebacker...

The lockout is really hurting Romo's ability to gel with Bryant, which I think is the most important factor in our offense.

I think both Austin and Bryant could be the two best receivers in the league, at least top 5-10. For a quarterback to have those weapons... should make for a really good career.

Yes, we're doomed.

Every other QB in the NFL has it automatically, but we have to adjust.

I've thought for a long time that it takes Romo a little while to click with WR's. But you would expect him to be more successful with WR's he's worked with longer also so......

A while back one of the analysts (I think it was Jaws) said that Romo was a QB who relied a lot on anticipation - i.e. knowing where receivers were going to be coming out of their breaks and throwing to a spot. It seems he has had more success with guys who are better route runners - Witten, Glenn, Miles (after a few years in the system) than other guys like Roy or Marty B who are not considered precise route guys. Would also seem to explain why Romo clicked with Phillips quicker than Marty.

Granted TO is an exception to this theory, but whatever you think of him you can't question he was ridiculously talented enough to make up for any sloppy route issues.

Kitna is more of a reactionary thrower - needs to see someone open before pulling the trigger. Which is why he had better numbers with Roy and Marty and even Dez, who is still learning, than Romo has.

Dunno how true it is, just throwing it out there. Seems to make sense though.

Roy was non existant with Kitna last season.

Roy's numbers dropped with Kitna..

Romo spent a lot of time with Austin in 2006 when Romo started the season as the back up to Bledsoe. In addition, he was rather invested in the development of Miles and wanted to see him succeed. He's admitted as much.

If there is even a problem here, I'd like to think the new WR Coach from G.Bay can be of help.

If there are complicated wrinkles in Garretts offence, hopefully Robinson can iron them out to make them more QB and WR friendly....

had good history in G.Bay

I'm much more concerned with the defense being the group that will need all the time they can get to make adjustments. As we all know, the offense will be operating under much the same system they've been in all along, while the defense doesn't have that same luxury with Rob Ryan being required to implement his system. We'd best be more concerned about them.

That is a great point. Completely forgot about Robinson.

Romo only played 5 complete games last season so he's going to have to work off some rust. He still has to get in synch with Dez who caught more passes in Kitna's first 3 starts then he did with Romo.

Kitna formed some good chemistry with Dez however Roy Williams who was finally starting to get on the same page with Romo his production fell off once Kitna took over.

This was odd seeing Roy had a 1300 yard season with Kitna in Detroit.

Romo makes every. single. player. on this offense - and the whole team for that matter - look better. Receivers are no exception. He and Roy just didn't click for that first year and a half, if they can get some good work in this offseason, there's no reason that they won't click next year.
