Collins upgrades RT but there's nothing but slop to play the other G spot. It could be a push on last year's line but you're not thinking correctly. How much less is this group than if they kept Leary and moved Collins? Significantly.

That lost the offseason for me.

Rather easy to make that assessment from a fans perspective, but you have to pay the bills and manage a cap from a managements perspective.
If we would have had Romos 14 million at the time that we had to make the Leary decision, probably would have been an easy decision to resign him.

Rather easy from a Joe Fan's perspective to excuse horrific personnel decisions on a salary cap number that can change with a stroke of a pen.

Nobody said re-sign him, Joe. Tag the man. If you think you can contend this year go all out and make a run at it. Don't allow the team strength to be left with an open starting spot for a street free agent competition.

We're heralded as the best offensive line in football, and rightfully so. But with Leary gone and Free retiring -- do you feel confident we will remain the best line? Oakland had a great line last year. Collins, hopefully will be as good as Free at RT.

Thoughts?

Does anyone think we take a step back? We lose some continuity.

It depends largely on Collins and Green. One of those two has to be able to handle right tackle. It's easy to cover for a weaker guard, but very difficult to cover for a weaker tackle. Frankly, that's why Free gets more flak than he deserves. Free was solid on a very vast majority of his plays, but if you goof up at right tackle, most of the time there's no one there to pick up the slack.

I have some degree of confidence for both of the replacement options we have, though, but I can't say without a doubt that it will work out for the best.

I felt worse about guard before we acquired Byron Bell. He's not a good tackle, but he's shown he can be a more than serviceable guard.

Yes, a step back is expected. Long term; should be okay.

This O-line as well as their RB can't wait for the season to begin.

Last season Zeke was a rookie learning the pro game and learning about his offensive line.

Now they are far more familiar with each other, they can anticipate each other, they can be even more cohesive and efficient.

This offense is going to be a freakin' machine in. There will be no step back. It will be epic.

"Serviceable"

It's what we heard a lot during the Nagy, Costa, Arkin, Livings era.

I think he'll be more the likes of Bernadeau, but maybe a little better. He's a lot better at guard than he is at tackle.
