Does this draft immediately make us closer to the eagles/commanders?

We lack playmakers on this team badly. Doubt that these two RBs are all of a sudden gonna fix the running game and the rest are journeyman. We might have the worst receiving corps in the league right now. Who is gonna score besides Ferguson and Ceedee? They will get all of the attention.

We are also still weak against the run. Added only two DT in the 7th and a smallish LB in the 5th wont fix that problem.

One draft just wasnt enough to fix all those problems but i think we had a better draft than last two years. We are rebuilding atleast kinda so need atleast another good draft or two before we can compete with the Eagles and WASH.

Dallas needed to add juice to the offense, so they drafted running back Jayden Blue, who can take any touch to the house. He might be the fastest player on the roster, and he uses it to get outside on runs and beat angles taken by defenders to create big plays in the running game. He was the top back in the draft class in percentage of total yards gained after contact. He was fourth in the class in yards after contact per carry and the top rusher in yards after being hit behind the line of scrimmage. He is also a mismatch in the passing game if he is up against linebackers or a safety who doesn't match his athleticism.

He led the class in the percentage of snaps lined up in the slot. New offensive coordinator, Klayton Adams, will enjoy creating plays to try to get Blue into the open field because if he does, Blue could take it to the house. This is another move, along with Booker, that helps both the rushing and passing attack. Grade: A

The most significant need left on defense for the Cowboys when Jay Toia was drafted was a run-stuffing defensive tackle who could anchor against double teams, which is what he was built to do. He is 6-foot-2, 342 pounds, and had a run defense grade of 70 from Pro Football Focus (PFF) even though he isn't great in pursuit on stretch runs. He was Dane Brugler's 13th-rated tackle and had a third-round grade that Dallas stole in the seventh. He is an underrated athlete as well. He played 55 snaps as an off-ball linebacker and had 19 pressures as a nose tackle-sized DT. Grade: B+

The hardest pick to grade is Ajani Cornelius because he has plenty of college starting-level experience on a top-level team, but isn't a pick for this season. The Cowboys' offensive line is loaded with guys, and even if he were hidden on the roster, he would be inactive all season. He has the frame and athleticism to be an excellent lineman, and he moves well when pulling and leading a ball carrier, but he doesn't have the footwork or technique to be impactful in the NFL. Another ball of clay for the coaching staff to mold, this one on the offensive side. Grade: C+

James is at his best blitzing the quarterback or moving laterally to make plays. He doesn't play with anticipation and instincts, but Matt Eberflus has always been a linebacker whisperer, and the coach gets his 20-year-old ball of clay to develop over the next few seasons.

If Blue would be that great he wouldnt have been there in the 5th and like the 20th rated RB in the draft. I see his potential but i doubt hes the solution to the cowboys running game problem.

And we still dont have receivers besides Ferguson and Ceedee. Not sure how we will stop teams loading the box with no targets on the wideouts.

You miss the point of management. One elevates and changes effectiveness through discipline, teaching, and how team work improves.

This is a player from the University of Texas. A quality program that adjusts and changes itself, yearly. The talent and high end talent of Blue has no doubt as to very high end potential. The special skills players have changed over the past two seasons at quarterback, running back, and receiver.

No doubt, despite system changes and opponent related changes, Blue enters the NFL as very talented and matches with a healthy quarterback in Dallas and a strongly, youthful offensive line group.

Concerning not being a woulda, coulda, shoulda...just look at Golden and his leap to the Packers. The year before, he wasn't even the leading Texas receiver. He got very fast and valuable when worked and developed.

Merit is definitely there for Blue in a system that highlights fast opening running and play action. That is a very productive match and fertile ground. Now.

The is great preparation and system interaction. It required a strong and dedicated team to put together.

The Cowboys were not afraid of the challenge presented them.

GO COWBOYS! :starspin:

Early take on our draft is most of the guys we got are really good football players. The guys from rounds 1-3 will all either start or have big impact almost immediately. The Day 3 guys are ok on paper… BUT I can’t say that this draft has immediately put this team in a better position to compete with the eagles and commanders. I Just can’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the guys we drafted in rounds 1-3.
  • 1st rounder Tyler Booker is a plug and play beast at G, I wish they could’ve traded down a couple spots to pick up a 4th rounder, but still a solid pick. A high character guy who was a captain at Alabama.
  • 2nd round DE Donovan Ezeiruaku is a very talented pass rusher. EZ is also a high character guy who was also a team captain at Boston College.
  • 3rd round CB Shavon Revel is a first round talent recovering from a knee injury. Where have we heard that before? Hopefully he’s fully recovered by Sept.
No problem really with those guys as far as their talent. They should contribute immediately. But if we are all being honest without the blue tinted fan glasses, the Cowboys STILL have glaring weaknesses at WR, RB and DT, three positions they badly needed an influx of top shelf talent.

So on Day 3 we acquired:
  • 5th round RB Jaydon Blue and he’s fast but he’s also small and not more than 8-10 touches a game guy who has had fumble issues. Are we better at RB? Hmmm….
  • 5th round traded up to get Florida LB Shemar James. A talented kid if not a little small. Seems a lot like last year’s 3rd round pick Marist Liafau.
  • 6th round picked up T Ajani Cornelius from Oregon. Backup swing T was not on my bingo card as a pressing need.
  • 7th round got UCLA DT Jay Toia, a big aggressive DT. But does this late sleeper suddenly make Mazi Smith a bad memory?
Like all drafts we need to wait on grading the 2025 Cowboys draft for at least a year; probably more like two years. Starting immediately, fans and the media will issue grades now but we really won’t know until pads are on and the real bullets fly in the regular season.

But if I am answering the question, “Did this draft get us closer to the eagles and commanders?” I would have to say no at this point.
I like the big fat DT picked and he could be a sleeper pick but the fact remains that we still don't have a run dawg at the MLB position.

I'm still waiting for that Ray Lewis, Luke Kuechly TYPE. I'm not saying they grow on trees but if we are getting an ex-Bears LB I'd rather he be more like Brian Urlacher than Jack Sanborn

Hades, just get us a Bradie James type. Not great, but extremely solid and never hurt.

The short answer is no.

This draft landed us 3 possible starters IMO.
Booker will start at OG and be good, maybe even great.
The Edge may or may not start but will get major pass rush reps.
Revel is not likely to start early year IMO.. He's not going to even open camp active. So to go from late activation to starting would be a bridge too far week 1 IMO.

Anything after those 3 is simply gravy. We could get some immediate kick return help form Blue and he may get some reps as a home run threat but realistically he is a RB3 type day 1.
the other guys are even further down the chart.

Eagles and Commanders also drafted well. We should be picked 3rd in the NFCE this upcoming season and probably around 9 wins.
If we shoot well past that it will almost certainly mean we got improved and healthy play from people already on the roster. Agent 0, Dak, Ferguson, Guyton, Mazi, Sam Williams, Kneeland.

.. every player has 50\50 chance to prove himself. It's one thing playing college ball, another playing NFL.
As we have seen in the past.
Let's hope that some surprise us. The more surprises, better chance competing with better teams

These are treading water picks. They are replacing , Zach Martin, Demarcus Lawrence, and Diggs (most likely). So, hopefully they will be as good as these guys were in their uninjured primes.

i would be surprised if they come close to these other guys when they werent injured. Zach Martin is a HOF, Lawrence was one of the better DE in the league for a while and Diggs had All Pro Seasons.

Best chance has the DE we picked but he is more of a 3-4 OLB so it will be interesting to see how they use him.

I agree. It's just replacing guys we lost ..........not stacking roster talent. I keep reading the BC DE is undersized and not much of a run stopper. I'm still looking at this defense and wondering how they are going to stop any team committed to running the ball.
