Dog-Can't Stand Up

Man, you guys are hilarious. I wish I could have found the humor in it when she was alive...But I was too busy trying to help her feel comfortable while her face was slowly pealing off from the tumors.

FeLV and FIV are no joke for cats. I certainly feel for you having to go through that.

I've had many cats over the years and dealt with many forms of cancer and other ailments, but never either of those.

Living with and loving an animal that is going through something so difficult is never easy on you or them. My heart goes out to anyone that has.

He's doing good today. I have been holding up his bowl for him to eat while he stands to relieve his vertebrae. His bowels all look normal. I am enjoying each hour as it arrives.

Has the vet given him any medications?

Question: so instead of putting the cat down, you let its condition get so bad its face was peeling off?

Have you tried an elevated stand for his food and water? It would be less strain on him.

I knew a guy when i was young that had a cat for 19 years. The guy was about 30 at the time so he'd had the cat most of his life. The poor thing had very little hair and just a few teeth left. It couldn't really walk all that well but the guy couldn't bring himslf to put it down. Felt bad for the cat.

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement and advice. I must be a sap because I get teary-eyed every time he happily gulps water and eats and relieves himself normally.

Hope your dog get better.

My 3.4 lb chichuhua had 3 vaccines yesterday and late in the day, she was limping from her back leg where they gave her the shots.

It made me feel terrible, so I can imagine how you are feeling even though it's no where close to what your dog is going through.

Good Luck!

Blame the stupid Vets for that. When I first went to them they told me the limp and seizures were just from old age and she'll be ok. I then go to them about the tumor and they check her mouth and tell me it's a bad tooth abscess and they then drain the blood from the tumor and give me special food.

The tumors kept coming back worser and worser and they would just drain them and look at her teeth and set me on my way. I finally found a vet who had a hunch on what it was and tested her. After finding out what it was I put her down 2 days later pissed off knowing she went all those weeks in pain with aids when I was thinking it was just a bad tooth.

Man, that is just terrible. Just like with people doctors, when it's serious, get a second opinion.

Understood. That sucks.

That's probably because it's only the gay cats that get it.

That's not true, Haitian cats get it, and hemophiliac cats...

More seriously, this thread has taken me back to a particularly hard time in my life, when I had to put my first best buddy Thunder down... this came just days after we'd buried my younger brother Ron, and as weird as this sounds, I think I grieved harder for that dog than I did my brother... then again, I saw Thunder every day for the previous 15 years, I might have seen Ron two or three times a year...

Like one of the other posters said, when Thunder was put down, I was there scratching his ears, telling him what a good dog he was... his tail was wagging right up until his eyes dimmed... I wasn't about to let him die surrounded by strangers... it hurt being there, but I'm glad I did it...

Hey, just because we make a few jokes about it doesn't mean that we're unsympathetic to you and your pet... believe me, I know how it hurts when an animal you love is desperately ill, and you can't do a think to help...

Hell, it hurt me when my current dog Aly (short for Alyeska) sprained her shoulder... watching her limp around until she healed up made my heart sick (but she did fully recover)...

Don't watch Marley & Me...

My whole family watched it and sat around blubbering like idiots...

Pets have a hold on us without a doubt...

Our current pup, Mikey, is nothing short of a full member of our family...
